โครงการทดลองผลิตภัณฑ์เชื้อเพลิงแก๊สโซฮอล์เริ่มต้นขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2528 ตามแนวพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เพื่อหาวิธีผลิตเชื้อเพลิงจากแอลกอฮอล์โดยการใช้อ้อยเป็นวัตถุดิบ โครงการทดลองผลิตภัณฑ์เชื้อเพลิงแก๊สโซฮอล์ เริ่มดำเนินการโดยใช้เงินทุนจากพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ที่ทรงพระราชทานให้ 925,000 บาท เพื่อเป็นทุนสำหรับการสร้างอาคารและอุปกรณ์การวิจัย และโครงการฯได้จัดสร้างหอกลั่นแอลกอฮอล์ขึ้นหอแรก ซึ่งในระยะแรกยังใช้งานได้ไม่ค่อยมีประสิทธิภาพนัก
ในปีพ.ศ. 2538 โครงการฯ ได้รับความร่วมมือจากกลุ่มบริษัทสุราทิพย์ และมีหอกลั่นใหม่ที่สามารถผลิตแอลกอฮอล์ได้ 25 ลิตรต่อชั่วโมง โดยในการกลั่น 1 ครั้ง ได้แอลกอฮอล์ 95% ประมาณ 900 ลิตร ซึ่งต้องนำแอลกอฮอล์ 95% ที่ได้เข้าสู่กระบวนการแยกน้ำ เพื่อดึงเอาน้ำออกให้ได้มากที่สุด จนได้แอลกอฮอล์ 99.5% จึงจะสามารถนำไปผสมกับน้ำมันเบนซินเพื่อเป็นเชื้อเพลิงที่ใช้กับรถยนต์ โดยโครงการฯ ได้นำผลผลิตที่ได้ไปทดลองใช้เติมรถยนต์ในโครงการฯ
ในระยะเริ่มแรก วัตถุดิบที่นำมาใช้ทำแอลกอฮอล์ คือ อ้อย ที่ประสบปัญหาราคาตกต่ำในช่วงเวลานั้น แต่ในปัจจุบันนี้ใช้การน้ำตาลแทน เพราะสามารถจัดหากากน้ำตาลให้ผลิตแอลกอฮอล์ได้อย่างต่อเนื่องตลอดทั้งปี และยังเป็นการใช้ส่วนที่เหลือจากกระบวนการผลิตน้ำตาลให้เกิดประโยชน์ เช่น น้ำกากส่า ซึ่งเป็นของเสียจากกระบวนการผลิต โครงการฯ จะนำส่งไปยังโรงปุ๋ยอินทรีย์ เพื่อใช้ในการผลิตปุ๋ย
ตามแนวพระราชดำริในการใช้ทุกสิ่งให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสุดนอกจากการผลิตแก๊สโซฮอล์สำหรับใช้กับรถยนต์แล้ว โครงการฯ ยังนำแอลกอฮอล์ 95% ไปผลิตเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์อื่นๆ อีกหลากหลายอย่าง เช่น แอลกอฮอล์แข็งสำหรับใช้อุ่นอาหาร เจลล้างมือโดยไม่ต้องล้างน้ำ น้ำหอม น้ำมันนวด โลชั่นกันยุง และสเปรย์ฉีดเท้า
