เมื่อวันที่ 25 พ.ย.2557 บริษัท แอร์บัส (Airbus) ได้นำเครื่องบินโดยสารรุ่นลำตัวกว้างพิเศษแบบ A350XWB (เอ 350 เอ็กซ์ดับเบิลยูบี) โดย XWB มาจาก Extra Wide Body) รุ่นล่าสุด เดินทางมาเยือนไทย ในฐานะที่เป็น 1 ใน 5 เมือง ในการจัดทัวร์เที่ยวบินสาธิตในเอเชีย คือ กรุงโซล โตเกียว ฮานอย กรุงเทพฯ และกัวลาลัมเปอร์ โดยใช้เครื่องบิน แอร์บัส รุ่น เอ 350-900 หมายเลข เอ็มเอสเอ็น 5 (MSN5) สำหรับทดสอบเที่ยวบินครั้งนี้ได้รับความร่วมมือจากบริษัท การบินไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) ในฐานะที่เป็นลูกค้า หลังจากการบินไทยมีคำสั่งในการจัดหาเครื่องบินแอร์บัส เอ 350 เอ็กซ์ดับเบิลยูบี จำนวน 12 ลำ แบ่งเป็นข้อตกลงสัญญาเช่าใช้งานจำนวน 8 ลำ และสั่งซื้อตรงจากแอร์บัส จำนวน 4 ลำ โดยจะนำไปใช้ปฏิบัติการบินในเส้นทางพิสัยไกล ให้บริการระดับพรีเมียม รวมทั้งบางเส้นทางบินในภูมิภาคฝ่ายการตลาด แอร์บัส เอ 350XWB กล่าวต่อว่า สำหรับเครื่องบินแอร์บัส เอ 350 เอ็กซ์ดับเบิลยูบี เป็นเครื่องบินโดยสารใหม่ล่าสุด ในกลุ่มผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องบินรุ่นลำตัวกว้างของแอร์บัส สามารถจุที่นั่งผู้โดยสารได้มากถึง 369 ที่นั่ง เมื่อเลือกวางผังแบ่งเป็น 2 ชั้นโดยสาร (ชั้นประหยัดและชั้นธุรกิจ) จุได้ 314 ที่นั่ง สามารถปฏิบัติการบินโดยไม่หยุดพัก (NonStop Flight) ในระยะไกลถึง 8,100 ไมล์ทะเล (สำหรับ A350-900) นอกจากนี้ ยังออกแบบลำตัวและปีกทำจากวัสดุคอมโพสิตแบบคาร์บอนไฟเบอร์ ที่มีน้ำหนักเบา ขับเคลื่อนด้วยเครื่องยนต์ โรลส์รอยซ์ รุ่นเทรนท์ เอ็กซ์ดับเบิลยูบี (Trent XWB) ที่ออกแบบมาใช้งานกับ เอ350 โดยเฉพาะ จึงมีประสิทธิภาพสูงให้แรงขับสูงถึง 97,000 ปอนด์ ประหยัดเชื้อเพลิงและลดการปล่อยคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ลงถึง 25% และลดต้นทุนในการบำรุงรักษาอย่างมาก ช่วยลดต้นทุนต่อที่นั่งต่อไมล์ลงเมื่อเทียบกับเครื่องบินพิสัยบินระยะไกล ของคู่แข่งอย่าง เครื่องบินโบอิ้ง 777 และเปรียบเทียบกับโบอิ้ง 787-9 ใช้เชื้อเพลิงน้อยกว่า 9% ส่งผลต่อค่าบำรุงรักษาที่ต่ำกว่าและมีต้นทุนต่อที่นั่งต่ำกว่าถึง 10%
