ยามเมื่อฤดูกาลเข้าพรรษาเวียนมาถึง ดอกไม้ชนิดหนึ่งก็เริ่มผลิดอกบานสะพรั่ง ผู้คนต่างพากันเก็บมาถวายพระจนก่อเกิดเป็น ประเพณี “ตักบาตรดอกไม้” ซึ่งเป็นประเพณีเก่าแก่ดั้งเดิมของชาวอำเภอพระพุทธบาท จังหวัดสระบุรี

โดยมีที่มาจากเรื่องราวในพระพุทธศาสนาว่า นาย สุมนมาลาการ ได้ถวายดอกมะลิบูชาแด่พระพุทธเจ้า และด้วยอานิสงส์ดังกล่าวทำให้นายสุมนมาลาการมีชีวิต และความเป็นอยู่ที่ดีขึ้น ด้วยเหตุนี้พุทธศาสนิกชน จึงได้พร้อมใจกันนำดอกไม้มาถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา

ดอกไม้ที่ชาวอำเภอพระพุทธบาท จังหวัดสระบุรี นำมาใช้ตักบาตรในประเพณีนี้ จึงเรียกขานกันว่า ‘ดอกเข้าพรรษา’ หรือ ‘ดอกหงส์เหิน’ เพราะลักษณะของดอกและเกสรประดุจดังตัวหงส์ ที่กำลังเหินบินด้วยท่วงท่าลีลาอันสง่างามนั่นเอง


หงส์เหิน (Globba winiti) เป็นพืชที่จัดอยู่ในวงศ์ขิง เป็นไม้ดอกเมืองร้อนเกิดในป่าร้อนชื้น พบในประเทศไทย, พม่า และเวียดนาม ภายใต้ร่มเงาไม้ใหญ่หรือตามชายป่า มีชื่อเรียกแตกต่างกันไปตามท้องถิ่น เช่น กล้วยจ๊ะก่า (ตาก), กล้วยจ๊ะก่าหลวง (ลำพูน), กล้วยเครือคำ (เชียงใหม่), ก้ามปู (พิษณุโลก), ขมิ้นผีหรือกระทือลิง (ภาคกลาง), ว่านดอกเหลือง (เลย), ดอกเข้าพรรษา (สระบุรี) เป็นต้น

‘ต้นหงส์เหิน’ หรือ ‘ต้นเข้าพรรษา’ เป็นไม้ล้มลุก มีลำต้นเป็นหัวประเภทเหง้าแบบมีรากสะสมอาหาร คล้ายรากกระชาย ส่วนของลำต้นเหนือดิน คือ กาบใบที่เรียงตัวกันแน่น ทำหน้าที่เป็นต้นเทียมเหนือดิน เกิดเป็นกลุ่มกอ สูงประมาณ 30-70 เซนติเมตร ใบเป็นใบเดี่ยวรูปหอก ออกเรียงสลับซ้ายขวาเป็นสองแถว

ส่วนดอกออกเป็นช่อซึ่งแทงออกมาจากยอดของลำต้นเทียม ช่อดอกมีลักษณะอ่อนช้อยสวยงาม ยาวประมาณ 10-20 เซนติเมตร มีก้านดอกย่อยเรียงอยู่โดยรอบ ประกอบด้วยดอกจริง 1-3 ดอก มีสีเหลืองสดใสคล้ายรูปตัวหงส์กำลังเหินบิน มีกลีบประดับขนาดใหญ่ตามช่อโดยรอบจากโคนถึงปลาย และสีของกลีบประดับมีหลายสี เช่น ขาว ม่วง เขียว และแดง


ดอกเข้าพรรษาหรือดอกหงส์เหิน หนึ่งปีจะออกดอกเพียงครั้งเดียว เฉพาะในช่วงเทศกาลวันเข้าพรรษาเท่านั้น ในท้องที่อำเภอพระพุทธบาท พบว่ามี 2 สกุล ได้แก่ สกุลกระเจียว มีดอกสีขาวหรือขาวอมชมพู และสกุลหงส์เหิน ดังกล่าวข้างต้น

เมื่อถึงวันเข้าพรรษา คือวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ของทุกปี ชาวอำเภอพระพุทธบาทจะพากันไปเก็บดอกเข้าพรรษาตามไหล่เขาโพธิลังกาหรือเขา สุวรรณบรรพต เทือกเขาวง และเขาพุในเขตอำเภอพระพุทธบาท นำมาจัดรวมกับธูปเทียนเพื่อตักบาตรถวายพระ
