สองปีถัดมา มีการศึกษาโครงการรถไฟความเร็วสูง สายกรุงเทพ - สนามบิน,หนองงูเห่า - ระยอง และคณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติอนุมัติโครงการดังกล่าว เมื่อวันที่ 30 สิงหาคม 1994 จากนั้นโครงการนี้ก็หยุดลงเนื่องจากพรรคการเมืองอื่นได้เป็นรัฐบาล
