สร้างวัดนี้ขึ้นตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ตั้งชื่อว่าวัดทอง ต่อมาเมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ก็โปรดเกล้าให้บูรณะวัดนี้ทั้งหมดและให้วัดนี้เป็นวัดประจำราชวงศ์จักรี
