แต่เดิมประตูท่าแพที่ถูกเรียกกันในปัจจุบันนั้นมีนามว่า "ประตูเชียงเรือก" เพราะอยู่ใกล้หมู่บ้านเชียงเรือก สร้างขึ้นครั้งแรกในรัชสมัยพญามังราย มหาราช เมื่อแรกตั้งเมืองเชียงใหม่ เมื่อปีพ.ศ. 1839
