ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ตำบลนาฝาย ตำบลท่าหินโงม ตำบลห้วยต้อน และตำบลนาเสียว อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดชัยภูมิ เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทือกเขาภูแลนคา มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมด 135,737.50 ไร่ หรือประมาณ 217 ตารางกิโลเมตร และเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของต้นน้ำลำธารที่สำคัญของจังหวัดชัยภูมิ คือ ลำปะทาว และต้นน้ำชี มีน้ำตกที่สวยงามหลายแห่ง ได้แก่ น้ำตกตาดโตน น้ำตกตาดฟ้า และน้ำตกผาเอียง ด้วยสภาพพื้นที่เป็นภูเขาสูงชันสลับซับซ้อน มีด้านลาดทางทิศใต้ และเป็นแนวสันเขายาวตั้งแต่ปราจีนบุรีผ่านเขาใหญ่ ชัยภูมิผ่านไปถึงเลย ลักษณะเช่นนี้จึงทำให้บริเวณอุทยานแห่งชาติตาดโตนเป็นแนวอับฝน อากาศจึงค่อนข้างร้อน แต่เนื่องจากสภาพโดยทั่วไปยังเป็นป่าที่มีสภาพสมบูรณ์พอสมควร จึงทำให้อุทยานแห่งชาติค่อนข้างเย็นสบาย พรรณไม้ที่สำคัญประกอบด้วยป่าเต็งรัง และป่าดิบแล้ง ชนิดไม้ในป่า มีเต็ง รัง พลวง กระบก กระโดน พะยอม รัก ประดู่ มะค่า ยาง กระบาก ตะเคียน ฯลฯ และไม้พื้นล่างส่วนใหญ่เป็นหญ้าเพ็ก สัตว์ป่ามี เก้ง หมูป่า พังพอน กระต่าย กระรอก กระแต ไก่ป่า และนกชนิดต่าง ๆ การเดินทาง จากตัวเมืองทางหลวงหมายเลข 2159 และเลี้ยวขวาเข้าทางหลวงหมายเลข 2051 ระยะทางจากตัวเมืองถึงที่ทำการอุทยานฯ ระยะทางประมาณ 21 กิโลเมตร เป็นถนนลาดยางตลอดสาย สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวในเขตอุทยานฯ ได้แก่
 
น้ำตกตาดโตน เป็นน้ำตกที่สวยงามใกล้ที่ทำการอุทยานฯ มีน้ำไหลตลอดปี โดยเฉพาะในฤดูฝนจะสวยงามเป็นพิเศษ มีความสูงประมาณ 6 เมตร และกว้าง 50 เมตร ด้านบนเป็นธารน้ำไหลผ่านลานหินสองฝั่งธารร่มรื่นด้วยต้นไม้ใหญ่ เหมาะที่จะนั่งพักผ่อนชมธรรมชาติและเล่นน้ำ บริเวณน้ำตกมี ศาลเจ้าพ่อตาดโตน (ศาลปู่ด้วง) อีกด้วย
  
การเดินทาง จากตัวเมืองตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 2159 และเลี้ยวขวาเข้าทางหลวงหมายเลข 2051 ระยะทางจากตัวเมืองถึงที่ทำการอุทยานฯ ระยะทางประมาณ 21 กิโลเมตร  หรืออาจใช้เส้นทางหมายเลข 201 ทางไปอำเภอภูเขียว จะมีเส้นทางแยกซ้ายอีก 21 กิโลเมตรไปน้ำตกตาดโตนได้เช่นกัน สำหรับผู้ที่เดินทางโดยรถโดยสาร สามารถใช้บริการรถสองแถวสายชัยภูมิ-ท่าหินโงม ลงที่ด่านเก็บค่าธรรมเนียมแล้วเดินเท้าอีก 1 กิโลเมตร
