ลักษณะต้นราชพฤกษ์ราชพฤกษ์ หรือ คูน หรือ ต้นคูน ภาษาอังกฤษ Golden shower, Indian laburnum, Pudding-pine tree, Purging Cassia ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ Cassia fistula Linn. จัดอยู่ในวงศ์ FABACEAE หรือวงศ์ LEGUMINOSAE และอยู่ในวงศ์ย่อย CAESALPINIOIDEAE เช่นเดียวกับชงโค มะขามแขก และเสี้ยวดอกขาว เป็นพืชพื้นเมืองในแถบเอเชียใต้ ไล่ตั้งแต่ทางตอนใต้ของปากีสถานไปจนถึงอินเดีย พม่า และประเทศศรีลังกานอกจากนี้ ต้นราชพฤกษ์ยังมีชื่อท้องถิ่นอื่นๆ อีกเช่น กุเพยะ (กะเหรี่ยง-กาญจนบุรี), ปูโย ปีอยู เปอโซ แมะหล่าอยู่ (กะเหรี่ยง-แม่ฮ่องสอน), ลักเกลือ ลักเคย (กะเหรี่ยง), ราชพฤกษ์ ชัยพฤกษ์ (ภาคกลาง), ลมแล้ง (ภาคเหนือ), ราชพฤกษ์ (ภาคใต้) เป็นต้น แต่โดยส่วนใหญ่แล้วเราจะเรียกต้นราชพฤกษ์ ว่า “ต้นคูน” มากกว่า เพราะจำง่ายกว่านั่นเอง (แต่มักจะเขียนผิดหรือสะกดผิดเป็น “ต้นคูณ” หรือ “คูณ“) คำว่า “ราชพฤกษ์” มีความหมายว่า “ต้นไม้ของพระราชา” ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของงานมหกรรมพืชสวนโลกซึ่งจัดขึ้นเพื่อฉลองในวโรกาสอันเป็นมหามงคล ที่พระเจ้าอยู่หัวของเราได้ทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติครบรอบ 60 ปี
