ประวัติความเป็นมา เดิมอาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์เป็นบ้านส่วนตัวของพระยาสุนทรานุรักษ์ (เนตร ณ สงขลา) ผู้ช่วยราชการเมืองสงขลา สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ.2421 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ.2437-2439 พระวิจิตรวรสาสน์ (เจ้าพระยายมราช-ปั้น สุขุม) ใช้เป็นจวนข้าหลวงพิเศษตรวจราชการเมืองสงขลา พัทลุง และนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นเวลา 2 ปี พ.ศ.2439-2460 ใช้เป็นศาลาว่าการมณฑลนครศรีธรรมราชเป็นเวลา 21 ปี พ.ศ.2460-2496 ใช้เป็นศาลากลาง จ.สงขลาเป็นเวลา 36 ปี หลังจากนั้นถูกปล่อยทิ้งร้าง ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน 2516 กรมศิลปากรได้ขึ้นทะเบียนอาคารหลังนี้เป็นโบราณสถาน ในช่วงปี พ.ศ.2517-2520 ได้ทำการบูรณะซ่อมแซมเพื่อใช้เป็นพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ สงขลา
