พืชสมุนไพร เป็นสิ่งที่อยู่คู่คนไทยมานับพันปี แต่เมื่อการแพทย์แผนปัจจุบันเริ่มเข้ามามีบทบาทในบ้านเรา สรรพคุณและคุณค่าของสมุนไพรอันเป็นสิ่งที่เรียกได้ว่าภูมิปัญญาโบราณก็เริ่มถูกบดบังไปเรื่อยๆ และถูกทอดทิ้งไปในที่สุด ความจริงคนส่วนใหญ่ก็พอรู้ๆ กันว่า สมุนไพรไทยเป็นสิ่งที่มีคุณค่าใช้ประโยชน์ได้จริง และใช้ได้อย่างกว้างขวาง แต่เป็นเพราะว่าเราใช้วิธีรักษาโรคแผนใหม่มานานมากจนวิชาแพทย์แผนโบราณที่มีสมุนไพรเป็นยาหลักถูกลืมจนต่อไม่ติด
ภาครัฐเริ่มกลับมาเห็นคุณค่าของสมุนไพรไทยอีกครั้งด้วยการแถลงนโยบายต่อรัฐสภาไว้เมื่อวันที่ 21 ตุลาคม 2535 ว่า " ให้มีการผสมผสานการแพทย์แผนไทยและสมุนไพรเข้ากับระบบบริการสาธารณสุขของชุมชนอย่างเหมาะสม"
