ในปัจจุบันกระทรวงพาณิชย์มีเป้าหมายให้ไทยเข้าไปชิงส่วนแบ่งตลาดสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์ของโลกที่มีมูลค่าประมาณ 54,900 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐฯ เติบโตสูงกว่าร้อยละ 20 ต่อปี คาดการณ์ว่าปี 2554 คาดว่า ไทยจะมีมูลค่าส่งออกสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์ประมาณ 132 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐฯ เพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 10 โดยจะใช้นโยบาย 4 บวก 2 (4+2) ซึ่งนโยบาย 4 แรก เป็นสิ่งที่ได้ดำเนินการอยู่แล้วและจะเพิ่มความเข้มข้นในการดำเนินการต่อไปคือการอบรมให้ความรู้และพัฒนาผู้ประกอบการสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์ด้านการตลาดและการทำธุรกิจเกษตรอินทรีย์การขยายตลาดสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์ทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ การส่งเสริมการสร้างมูลค่าเพิ่มของสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์และผลิตภัณฑ์และการอำนวยความสะดวกด้านโลจิสติกส์ตลอดจนข้อมูลข่าวสารด้านการตลาดและการค้า ส่วนอีก 2 นโยบายที่จะดำเนินการเพิ่มเติมคือการส่งเสริมให้มีการบริโภคสินค้าดังกล่าวภายในประเทศให้มากขึ้น และผลักดันให้ไทยเป็นผู้เชื่อมโยงการผลิตและการค้าของสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์ อาเซียนสู่ตลาดโลก
โอกาสของประเทศไทยนอกจากการการเป็นผู้ผลิตและมองความร่วมมือกับประเทศในอาเซียนโดยไม่มองว่าเป็นคู่แข่งจะทำให้ประเทศไทยได้โอกาสจากการที่ให้เพื่อนบ้านเป็นฐานการผลิต การเป็นที่ปรึกษาเพราะมีประสบการณ์มาก่อนและการเป็นผู้ให้การรับรอง (Certified body) หากสามารถทำให้มาตรฐานไทยเป็นมาตรฐานอาเซียนจะยิ่งทำให้ประเทศไทยเป็นศูนย์กลางเกษตรอินทรีย์
