การนำน้ำมันที่สกัดจากพืชมาใช้เป็นน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงทดแทนสำหรับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลก็เป็นโครงการในพระราชดำริอีกโครงการหนึ่ง โดยทรงให้ทดลอง นำน้ำมันปาล์มมาใช้กับ เครื่องยนต์ดีเซล เพราะปาล์มเป็นพืชที่ให้ปริมาณน้ำมันต่อพื้นที่ปลูก สูงกว่าพืชชนิดอื่นๆ และมีต้นทุนการผลิตต่ำที่สุด ในกระบวนการผลิดน้ำมันพืชในปัจจุบัน อีกทั้งยังเป็นผลผลิต ที่เกษตรสามารถผลิตขึ้น ได้เองภายในประเทศ การทดลองใช้น้ำมันปาล์มเป็นน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงสำหรับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซล เริ่มต้นลงมือกันตั้งแต่ เดือนกันยายน 2543 เป็นต้นมา โดยแนวความคิดจากสมมุติฐาน
การออกแบบเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลต้นแบบเดิมที่ออกแบบสำหรับใช้กับน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิง ที่มีความไวไฟต่ำ เช่น น้ำมันพืชทั่วๆไป และหลักการทำงานพื้นฐานของ เครื่องยนต์ดีเซลในปัจจุบันก็ยังคงเดิมอยู่ หากแต่ว่าได้มีการพัฒนานำเอาเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ เข้ามาช่วยเสริมให้ ประสิทธิภาพ และสมรรถนะของเครื่องยนต์ ให้ดีขึ้นกว่าเดิมมาก ในการทดลองนี้ได้ นำเอาน้ำมันปาล์มประเภทต่างๆ มาทดลอง ใช้กับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลประเภทต่างๆ ที่มีใช้อยู่ในประเทศไทยในปัจจุบัน รวมไปถึงเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลรุ่นใหม่ ที่กำลังจะนำเข้ามาใช้ในอนาคต ทำการทดลองทั้งในห้องทดลอง และในสภาพแวดล้อมการ ใช้งานปกติทั่วไป ซึ่งปรากฎว่า น้ำมันปาลม์กลั่นบริสุทธิ์ (R.B.D. Palm Olein) มีความเหมาะสมที่จะนำมาใช้เป็นน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงดีเซลมากที่สุด โดยไม่ต้องมีการปรับแต่ง หรือดัดแปลงเครื่องยนต์ แต่ประการใด ทั้งยังสามารถสลับเปลี่ยนหรือผสมกับน้ำมันดีเซลทั่วไป ได้ทันทีทุกอัตราส่วน ในด้านประสิทธิภาพการทำงานของเครื่องยนต์ ที่ใช้น้ำมันปาล์มบริสุทธิ์ ก็ยังคงให้ประสิทธิภาพการทำงาน สูงสุดของเครื่องยนต์ ตามที่ผู้ออกแบบได้ออกแบบไว้ ทั้งแรงม้า (Power) แรงบิด (Torque) และรอบการทำงานของเครื่องยนต์ และจากการทดลองก็พบว่า ในเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลบางแบบ กลับให้ประสิทธิภาพการทำงานสูงกว่าการใช้น้ำมันดีเซลธรรมดา หลังจากการทดลองประสบความสำเร็จ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงได้ทรงขอจดสิทธิบัตร ที่กรมทรัพย์สินทางปัญญา
กระทรวงพานิชย์ เมื่อวันที่ 9 เมษายน 2544 ได้สิทธิบัตรเลขที่ 10764 ในชื่อ การใช้น้ำมันปาล์ม กลั่นบริสุทธิ์เป็นน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงสำหรับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซล การนำน้ำมันปาล์มกลั่นบริสุทธิ์ มาใช้แทนน้ำมันดีเซล ก็พบว่าน้ำมันปาล์มกลั่นบริสุทธิ์ หรือที่เรียกกันว่า ปาล์มโอเลอีน ซึ่งเป็นน้ำมันที่ใช้ในการปรุงอาหาร มาใช้กับเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลมีข้อดี ในส่วนที่เป็นน้ำมันสะอาด และมีความไวไฟต่ำทำให้สะดวกในการเก็บ เป็นสารชีวภาพที่สามารถย่อยสลายตัวได้ง่าย หากปนเปื้อนไปในสิ่งแวดล้อม และจากการทดลองก็พบว่าไอเสียที่ปล่อยจากการสันดาปภายในเครื่องยนต์ มีคุณภาพดีกว่า น้ำมันดีเซล คือควันดำและเขม่าน้อยมาก ไม่มีกลิ่นฉุน และไม่มีสารซัลเฟอร์อันเป็นอันตรายต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตและกัดกร่อนสร้างความเสียหาย แก่อุปกรณ์ในเครื่องยนต์ อีกทั้งยังมีคุณสมบัติด้านการหล่อลื่นในตัวเอง ทำให้ช่วยลดการสึกหรอและเสียงรบกวนของเครื่องยนต์ซึ่งจะส่งผลให้เครื่องยนต์มีอายุการใช้งานยืนยาวขึ้น อีกทั้งยังช่วย อนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม และสามารถผลิตได้เองภายในประเทศ ลดการขาดดุลการค้าระหว่างประเทศ เป็นการช่วยเหลือเกษตรกร
