Organization and Objectives
Ministry of Agriculture was renamed as Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation on 8 August 1996 in order to acknowledge the importance of irrigation in agriculture.
Myanmar Jute Industries (MJI), an organization under the Ministry of Industry No. 1. Was placed under this Ministry on 1 April 1994 in order to manage and supervise the industrial crops effectively through all steps such as cultivation, agriculture production, procurement, processing and selling. Similarly, in order to promote the production of sugarcane, cotton, silk and perennial crops; new organizations such as Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise (MSE), Myanmar Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise (MCSE) and Myanmar Perennial Crops Enterprise (MPCE) were newly created in May 1994. In view of water as a key resource, Water Resources Utilization Department (WRUD) was also newly created in February 1995 to assist in use of water more effectively from rivers and streams, and to manage profoundly in exploration and utilization of underground water for crop development. With the aim to further improvement in support of credit to agricultural production, Myanmar Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (MARDB) as an organization under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue was moved to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in 14 August 1996 and reorganized and Myanmar Agricultural Development Bank (MADB). In addition, Agricultural Institute and Agriculture High Schools under the Ministry of Education were transferred to the MOAT on 1 January 1997, aiming to develop the technicians as main power resources to provide well services in development of agriculture sector.
At present, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is composed of the 14 institutions as: Minister's Office, Department of Agricultural Planning, Myanmar Agriculture Service, Myanmar Farms Enterprise, Irrigation Department, Agricultural Mechanization Department, Settlement and Land Records Department, Myanmar Sugarcane Enterprise, Manna Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise, Myanmar Jute Industries, Myanmar Perennial Crops Enterprise, Water Resources Utilization Department, Myanmar Agricultural Development Bank and Institution of Agriculture. There is 107829 total staff comprised of 4844 officers and 102895 other ranks as the organizational set up of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.
