ประวัติความเป็นมา

อุทยานแห่งชาติห้วยน้ำดัง ได้ถูกประกาศให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ โดยได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดบริเวณที่ดินป่าเชียงดาว และป่าแม่แตงในท้องที่ตำบลเปียงหลวง ตำบลเมืองแหง อำเภอเวียงแหง ตำบลกื้ดช้าง ตำบลป่าแป๋ อำเภอแม่แตง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และป่าแม่ปายฝั่งซ้ายตอนบนในท้องที่ตำบลเวียงเหนือ ตำบลแม่ฮี้ ตำบลแม่นาเติง อำเภอปาย จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน ซึ่งประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 112 ตอนที่ 33ก ลงวันที่ 14 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2538 มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 782,575 ไร่ หรือ 1,252.12 ตารางกิโลเมตร นับเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 81 ของประเทศไทย

อุทยานแห่งชาติห้วยน้ำดัง มีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมท้องที่อำเภอแม่แตง อำเภอเชียงดาว อำเภอเวียงแหง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และอำเภอปาย จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน มีสภาพป่าและธรรมชาติที่สมบูรณ์ ภูเขาสูงชันสลับซับซ้อน เป็นป่าต้นน้ำลำธาร มีจุดเด่นทางธรรมชาติที่สวยงามและจุดชมวิวที่สามารถชมบรรยากาศอันร่มรื่น โดยเฉพาะบริเวณห้วยน้ำดัง ที่มีชื่อว่าทะเลหมอกที่งดงามยิ่ง มีชื่อเสียงแห่งหนึ่งของประเทศไทย อุทยานแห่งชาติห้วยน้ำดังมียอดดอยที่มีธรรมชาติงดงามอีกหลายแห่ง เช่น ดอยช้าง ดอยสามหมื่น รวมทั้งมีโป่งเดือดซึ่งเป็นน้ำพุร้อนธรรมชาติ ส่วนการล่องแพในลำน้ำแม่แต่งก็เป็นที่นิยมมากขึ้น

ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ
