เมื่อได้หลวงพ่อมาไว้สักการะบูชาแล้ว ก็ได้มีท่านผู้รู้ออกความเห็นว่า วัดนี้ยังเรียกชื่อวัดกันไม่แน่นอน จึงพร้อมใจกันเปลี่ยนชื่อวัดเสียใหม่ว่า ?วัดโสทร? อันหมายความว่า วัดพระ 3 องค์ พี่น้องร่วมอุทรเดียวกัน เมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็นชื่อวัดโสทรแล้ว หมู่บ้านและคลองที่ขึ้นอยู่กับวัดนี้ก็ได้นามเปลี่ยนตามวัดไปด้วย เดิมทีเดียววัดนี้ใช้ตัวหนังสือเขียนว่า ?โสทร? ไม่ได้เขียนว่า ?โสธร? ดังปัจจุบันนี้ แต่เนื่องด้วยพระพุทธรูปที่ได้มาคือหลวงพ่อโสธรนั้น มีอานุภาพและความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ปรากฏ และรูปทรงท่านสวยงามมาก จึงได้เขียนและชื่อวัดว่า ?วัดโสธร? ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า ?พระพุทธรูปศักดิ์สิทธิ์? มาจนทุกวันนี้

ประวัติความเป็นมาของหลวงพ่อโสธรนี้มีผู้เล่าสืบ ๆ กันมาหลายกระแส ได้สอบถามผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่หลายคน ซึ่งท่านเหล่านั้นก็ได้รับฟังมาจากบรรพบุรุษเล่าให้ฟังต้องกันว่า ?หลวงพ่อโสธร? ลอยน้ำมาตามคำว่า มีพระพี่น้องชายกัน 3 องค์ อยู่ทางเมืองเหนือแสดงอิทธิฤทธิ์ปาฏิหารย์ล่องลอยมาตามแม่น้ำจากทางทิศเหนือ เรื่อยมาจามลำแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ในที่สุดมาผุดขึ้นใน แม่น้ำบางปะกง ณ ที่ตำบลหนึ่ง และแสดงปาฏิหารย์ลอยทวนกระแสน้ำให้ประชาชนเห็นทั้ง 3 องค์ ประชาชนแถบนั้นต่างพร้อมใจกันอาราธนาเอาเชือกพรวนมนิลาลงไปผูกมัดที่องค์หลวงพ่อทั้ง 3 แล้วช่วยกันฉุดลากขึ้นฝั่งด้วยจำนวนผู้คนประมาณ 500 กว่าคนก็ฉุดขึ้นไม่ได้ เชือกขนาดใหญ่ที่ผูกองค์หลวงพ่อทั้ง 3 ก็ขาดฉุดไม่สำเร็จตามความประสงค์ ครั้นแล้วหลวงพ่อทั้งสามองค์ก็จมน้ำหายไปต่อหน้าคนทั้งหมด สถานที่พระพุทธรูปทั้ง 3 องค์ ได้ลอยทวนน้ำมานั้นเลยได้ชื่อว่า ?ตำบลสามพระทวน? แต่ต่อมากลับเรียกว่า สัมปทวน ได้แก่แม่น้ำหน้าวัดสมปทวน อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดฉะเชิงเทรา ทุกวันนี้
