ครั้งพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชทรงสถาปนากรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ขึ้นเป็นราชธานี ได้มีการรื้ออิฐจากสถาปัตยกรรมในกรุงศรีอยุธยาเพื่อไปก่อสร้างกรุงเทพมหานคร ทำให้โบราณสถานต่าง ๆ ถูกทำลายและทิ้งร้างไป[1] ครั้นถึงสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดให้อนุรักษ์และฟื้นฟูโบราณสถานในกรุงศรีอยุธยาขึ้นอีกครั้ง

ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระยาโบราณราชธานินท์ ข้าหลวงมณฑลกรุงเก่าทำการขุดแต่งโบราณสถาน และปรับปรุงสภาพในพระราชวังโบราณ

เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2478 กรมศิลปากรประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนโบราณสถานหลายแห่งในเกาะรอบเมืองพระนครศรีอยุธยาเป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญของชาติ รวม 69 แห่ง[2]

ต่อมาในสมัยของ จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม จึงได้เริ่มโครงการบูรณะพระที่นั่ง และวัดต่างๆ โดยมีกรมศิลปากรเป็นผู้ดูแล

ปี พ.ศ. 2512 ได้มีโครงการชื่อ โครงการสำรวจขุดแต่งและบูรณะปรับปรุงโบราณสถาน โดยมีความพยายามที่จะประสานงานร่วมมือกับองค์กรต่างๆ ในอันที่จะอนุรักษ์เมืองประวัติศาสตร์พระนครศรีอยุธยาไว้

ในที่สุด พ.ศ. 2519 ได้มีการปรับปรุงโครงสร้างของงานชิ้นใหม่ แล้วจัดทำโครงการอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พระนครศรีอยุธยาขึ้น และเริ่มทำการบูรณะปรับปรุงโบราณสถานเป็นต้นมาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2520

และในประชุมคณะกรรมการมรดกโลกสมัยสามัญครั้งที่ 15 ปี พ.ศ. 2534 ณ เมืองคาร์เธจ ประเทศตูนิเซีย นครประวัติศาสคร์พระนครศรีอยุธยา พร้อมด้วยเมืองประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัยและเมืองบริวาร(อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย ศรีสัชนาลัย และกำแพงเพชร) และเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าทุ่งใหญ่-ห้วยขาแข้ง ได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นแหล่งมรดกโลก
