ประวัติเกี่ยวกับสวนสัตว์ดุสิต

สวนสัตว์ดุสิต แต่เดิมเรียกว่า สวนดุสิต หรือ เขาดินวนา พระบาทสมเด็ทพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2438 หลังจากที่พระองค์ทอดพระเนตรกิจการสวนพฤกษชาติของต่างประเทศ และ พบว่าสวนพฤกษชาติเป็นสถานที่ที่ให้ความรู้ความเพลิดเพลินและเป็นที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจของประชาชน จึงมีพระราชดำริให้จัดสร้างขึ้นในประเทศไทยบ้าง โดยโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นในพื้นที่ราบทางด้านทิศตะวันออกติดคลองเปรมประชากร (ถนนพระราม 5) ด้วยการขุดสระน้ำใหญ่ประกอบคูคลองระบายน้ำ และถนน แล้วนำดินขึ้นมาเป็นเนเขาเกาะกลางน้ำเรียกว่า "เขาดิน" และรอบๆ เขาดินนั้น ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ปลูกลงพรรณไม้นานาชนิด สร้างขึ้นเป็นสวนพฤกษชาติ สำหรับส่วนพระองค์เรียกว่า "วนา" รวมอาณาเขตส่วนนี้ทรงโปรดเรียกว่า "เขาดินวนา" โดยในขั้นต้นพระองค์ให้สร้างขึ้นสำหรับเป็นที่ประพาส และทรงพระเกษมสำราญส่วนพระองค์ และ ข้าราชบริภารฝ่ายในก่อน ดังนั้น สวนดุสิต หรือ เขาดินวนา จึงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในเขตพระราชฐานพระราชวังดุสิต

ภายหลังจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง พ.ศ. 2475 แล้ว คณะรัฐบาลจอมพล ป.พิบูลสงครามจึงได้กราบบังคมทูลขอพระราชทานสวนดุสิต ให้ดำเนินการจัดทำเป็นสวนสาธารณะ และเป็นที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจของประชาชน ในเวลานั้น พระองค์เจ้าทิพอาภาเป็นผู้สำเร็จราชการแทนพระองค์ได้พระราชทานอนุมัติในนามของ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดล รัชกาลที่ 8 ให้เทศบาลกรุงเทพรับบริเวณสวนดุสิต หรือ เขาดินวนา สนามเสือป่า และ สวนอัมพร มาจัดเป็นสวนสาธารณะได้

จากนั้นทางเทศบาลกรุงเทพ ได้จัดการย้ายกวางดาว และ สัตว์ชนิดต่างๆ มาจากสวนอัมพร และ ย้ายสัตว์บางชนิด เช่น จระเข้ ลิง จากสวนสราญรมย์ มาไว้ที่เขาดินวนา และได้ขอให้ทางสำนักพระราชวังส่งช้างหลวง มาให้พระชาชนได้ชมในวันอาทิตย์ และ เมื่อปรับปรุงสิ่งก่อสร้างต่างๆ เรียบร้อยแล้วทางเทศบาลนครกรุงเทพจึงเปิดสวนสัตว์ดุสิตให้ประชาชนเที่ยวชม และ พักผ่อนหย่อนใจได้เมื่อวันที่ 18 มีนาคม 2481 และให้เรียกสวนดุสิตนี้ว่า "สวนสัตว์ดุสิต" ซึ่งถือได้ว่าเป็นสวนสัตว์แห่งแรกในประเทศไทย
