อุทยานแห่งชาติเวียงโกศัย เป็นอุทยาน

อุทยานแห่งชาติเวียงโกศัย เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติแห่งแรกของจังหวัดแพร่ มีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมท้องที่ อำเภอลอง อำเภอวังชิ้น จังหวัดแพร่ และอำเภอเถิน อำเภอสบปราบ อำเภอแม่ทะ จังหวัดลำปาง มีสภาพป่าภูเขาสูงสลับซับซ้อน ทิวทัศน์และน้ำตกสวยงามหลายแห่ง เช่น น้ำตกแม่เกิ๋งหลวง น้ำตกแม่เกิ๋งน้อย และมีบ่อน้ำแร่แม่จอก ซึ่งเป็นบ่อน้ำร้อน ทั้งเป็นแหล่งต้นน้ำลำธารที่สำคัญ เนื้อที่ประมาณ 410 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือ 256,250 ไร่ ได้ประกาศจัดตั้งให้เป็น "อุทยานแห่งชาติเวียงโกศัย" เมื่อวันที่ 9 ตุลาคม 2524


ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ

ภูมิอากาศของอุทยานแห่งชาติเวียงโกศัย แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ฤดูกาล คือ ฤดูร้อน ระหว่างเดือนมีนาคม-พฤษภาคม อุณหภูมิสูงสุดประมาณ 39 องศาเซลเซียส ในเดือนเมษายน ฤดูฝนระหว่างเดือนมิถุนายน-ตุลาคม ฤดูหนาว ระหว่างเดือนพฤศจิกายน-กุมภาพันธ์ อุณหภูมิต่ำสุดประมาณ 13 องศาเซลเซียส ในเดือนธันวาคม
พันธุ์ไม้และสัตว์ป่า
สภาพป่าตอนบนของเทือกเขามีลักษณะเป็นป่าดิบแล้งส่วนตอนล่างมีลักษณะเป็นป่าเบญจพรรณ พรรณไม้ที่สำคัญ ได้แก่ มะค่าโมง ยาง ดำดง ตะแบก ประดู่ แดง และไม้สัก ซึ่งขึ้นอยู่ปะปนบ้าง ส่วนไม้พื้นล่างเป็นพวกไม้ไผ่ชนิดต่าง ๆ ปาล์ม หวาย และเอื้องดิน เป็นต้น
สัตว์ป่าที่เคยพบอาศัยอยู่ในป่าแห่งนี้มี กวาง เสือ และช้างป่า แต่ถูกลักลอบเข้ามาล่าอย่างหนัก เหลือแต่สัตว์ขนาดเล็ก ๆ เช่น เก้ง หมูป่า กระรอก กระแต และนกชนิดต่าง ๆ มีชุกชุมอยู่ในบริเวณหุบเขา และแหล่งน้ำต่าง ๆ
