ปัจจุบันการเทคโนโลยีการติดต่อสื่อสารมีการเจริญเติบโตและพัฒนาอย่างรวดเร็วจากในอดีต มนุษย์เราติดต่อสื่อสารกัน ด้วยภาษากาย การใช้สัญลักษณ์ต่างๆ เช่น ควันไฟ การวาดภาพตามผนังถ้ำ ภาษาพูด และภาษาเขียน ตามลำดับ การสื่อสารจึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญของมนุษย์ มนุษย์ใช้การติดต่อสื่อสารในการรับส่งข้อมูลข่าวสารต่างๆ เพื่อให้สามารถก้าวทันต่อสถานการณ์และการเปลี่ยน
แปลงในโลกยุคปัจจุบัน ทำให้เทคโนโลยีการติดต่อสื่อสารมีการพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยมีการประยุกต์เครื่องมือและอุปกรณ์สื่อสารให้มีประสิทธิภาพสูงในการใช้ ทำให้การสื่อสารเป็นไปอย่างไร้พรมแดนโดยใช้เครือข่ายอินเตอร์เน็ตเป็นศูนย์กลาง ได้แก่ คอมพิวเตอร์ตั้งโต๊ะ โน้ตบุ๊ค แท็บเล็ต และสมาร์ทโฟน เป็นต้น

ดังนั้นทางคณะผู้วิจัยจึงเห็นความสำคัญในการศึกษาพฤติกรรมการใช้สมาร์ทโฟน เนื่องด้วยนักศึกษาพยาบาลศาสตรบัณฑิตอยู่ในช่วงอายุที่มีการใช้สมาร์ทโฟนมากที่สุด มีการใช้สมาร์ทในชีวิตประจำวัน เพื่อการสื่อสาร หรือสืบค้นหาข้อมูล รวมถึงเพื่อความบันเทิง เช่น facebook, line, instagram เป็นต้น ซึ่งหากมีพฤติกรรมการใช้ที่ไม่ถูกต้องก็อาจจะทำให้เกิดปัญหาทางการเรียนหรือสังคมได้ ทางคณะผู้วิจัยเห็นความสำคัญในการศึกษาพฤติกรรมการใช้สมาร์ทโฟนของนักศึกษาพยาบาลศาสตรบัณฑิต วิทยาลัยพยาบาลบรมราชชนนี อุดรธานี ในครั้งนี้ เพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการพัฒนาพฤติกรรมการใช้สมาร์ทโฟนให้เป็นไปในทางที่เหมาะสมต่อไป
