ตลาดหุ้น คืออะไร?
ตลาดหุ้น หรือ ตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย คือ ตลาดซึ่งเป็นแหล่งรวมของบริษัทหลายๆ บริษัท ที่เข้ามาทำการจดทะเบียนในตลาดหลักทรัพย์ เพื่อให้ผู้ที่มีเงินเหลือเก็บ ซึ่งเราเรียกว่า "นักลงทุน" เข้ามาร่วมลงทุน และนักลงทุนเหล่านั้นก็จะเป็นหนึ่งในผู้ร่วมถือหุ้นของบริษัท หรือร่วมเป็นเจ้าของในบริษัทนั้นๆ การลงทุนในตลาดหุ้นจึงเป็นทางเลือกเพื่อการออมเงินในระยะยาวที่ผู้ออมสามารถหลีกเลี่ยง หรือป้องกันการขาดทุนที่เกิดจากระดับอัตราเงินเฟ้อได้ ตลาดหลักทรัพย์จัดตั้งขึ้นภายใต้พระราชบัญญัติตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2517 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อจัดให้มีแหล่งกลางสำหรับการซื้อ ขาย หลักทรัพย์ เพื่อส่งเสริมการออมทรัพย์ และเพื่อการระดมเงินทุนในประเทศ โดยได้เปิดให้มีการซื้อขายขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการในวันที่ 30 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2518 โดยชื่อภาษาอังกฤษในขณะนั้นคือ "Securities Exchange of Thailand" และได้มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อภาษาอังกฤษเป็น "The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)" เมื่อวันที่ 1 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2534 เป็นต้นมา
