4.5. ประเภทและสาเหตุของความขัดแย้งในสังคมไทย
1. ความขัดแย้งในตัวเอง

ดังนั้นความขัดแย้งและความรุนแรงภายในตัวบุคคลเป็นความขัดแย้งที่เกิดขึ้นอยู่ภายในจิตใจซึ่งสามารถส่งไปยังพฤติกรรมการแสดงออก กล่าวคือถ้าบุคคลมีจิตใจที่ต่ำหรือความโหดร้าย ก็จะส่งผลไปยังพฤติกรรมให้กระทำอันสิ่งที่ชั่วร้าย ถ้าบุคคลที่มีจิตใจอยู่ในระดับสูงหรือความอ่อนโยนก็จะส่งผลให้พฤติกรรมแสดงออกไปในทางที่ดีงาม หรือบุคคลที่มีทั้งความโหดร้ายและความอ่อนโยนทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้นอาจขึ้นอยู่กับสถานการณ์ของบุคคลแต่ละบุคคล
ฉะนั้นมนุษย์จะมีความสุขได้ต่อเมื่อประสบสันติภาพภายในตนเอง อันเป็นผลจากความเข้าใจและการยอมรับตนเองและผู้อื่นอย่างที่แต่ละบุคคลเป็น กล่าวคือเข้าใจและยอมรับในความเป็นเช่นนั้นเองของสรรพสิ่ง และนั่นคือจุดเริ่มต้นของการดำรงอยู่อย่างประสานสอดคล้องระหว่างปัจเจกบุคคลกับมนุษย์ชาติและธรรมชาติอันจะนำไปสู่การสร้างสันติภาพในระดับประเทศและระดับโลก จะเห็นได้ว่าความขัดแย้งมีหลายระดับตั้งแต่ระดับที่เล็กที่สุดคือความขัดแย้งภายในบุคคล และกว้างที่สุดคือความขัดแย้งระดับโลก
ดังนั้นมนุษย์พึงช่วยกันพัฒนาความสามารถในการมองให้เห็นธรรมชาติที่แท้ของสรรพสิ่ง โดยเฉพาะในระดับเบื้องต้น เราควรพัฒนาความสามารถในการเห็นและเข้าใจถึงความเป็นมนุษย์ที่มีอยู่อย่างเท่าเทียมกันของคนทุกคน แล้วจึงแผ่ขยายลึกซึ้งไปถึงสรรพสัตว์และธรรมชาติ เพื่อความเมตตากรุณาและความรักจะเกิดขึ้นในจิตใจของเรา เราจะตระหนักว่าผู้ที่กล่าวกันว่าเป็นศัตรูนั้นแท้จริงมิใช่ศัตรูมีแต่ภาพลวงที่เกิดจากความงมงายในลัทธิใดลัทธิหนึ่ง เพื่อจะได้ป้องกันมิให้มนุษย์ต้องมาฆ่าฟันกันเอง และสิ่งที่สำคัญที่จะทำให้เราและผู้คนรอบข้างเรามีกำลังใจก็คือ ความมั่นคงต่อสิ่งที่ถูกต้องที่ตนกำลังกระทำ ความกล้าหารที่จะเผชิญหน้ากับปัญหา และความยากลำบากหรืออุปสรรค์ใดๆ

สิทธิพงศ์ สิทธิขจร (2535) ได้ให้ความหมาย ความขัดแย้งระหว่างบุคคล หมายถึง สภาพที่ทำให้เกิดความคับข้องใจกัน หรือตกอยู่ในสภาวะที่สามารถจะตัดสินใจหรือตกลงหาข้อยุติอันเป็นที่พอใจของทั้งสองฝ่ายได้
