จังหวัดชัยภูมิ นับเป็นที่ตั้งของแหล่งอารยธรรมอันเก่าแก่นับตั้งแต่สมัยทวารวดี สมัยขอม กระทั่งสมัยที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากอาณาจักรล้านช้าง มีการค้นพบโบราณสถานและโบราณวัตถุมากมายในหลายพื้นที่ของจังหวัด ต่อมาปรากฏชื่อเป็นเมืองหน้าด่านในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในรัชกาลสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช โดยมีฐานะเป็นเมืองขึ้นของเมืองนครราชสีมา คู่กับเมืองบุรีรัมย์ ภายหลังจึงร้างไป
