เจ็ตสกี คือ เรือแข่ง หรือพาหนะที่ใช้เล่นกีฬาทางน้ำ ซึ่งได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา แถมมีนักกีฬาจ็ตสกีไทยไปสร้างชื่อเสียงในการแข่งขันระดับโลกมาไม่น้อย เพราะเจ็ตสกีเป็นกีฬาทางน้ำที่เล่นง่าย และปลอดภัย ถ้าว่ายน้ำเป็น ทั้งยังเสริมสร้างความแข็งแรงของกล้ามเนื้อทุกส่วน เพราะต้องใช้ร่างกายทั้งตัว ควบคุมเครื่องเล่น รวมถึงผู้เล่นต้องมีสมาธิและสติที่นิ่งเป็นอย่างยิ่ง
ประเภทของเรือเจ็ตสกี แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภท คือ
Ski – เรือเจ็ตสกีแบบยืน
Sport – เรือเจ็ตสกีแบบสปอร์ต (ผสมระหว่าเรือยืนและเรือนั่ง)
Runabout – เรือเจ็ตสกีแบบนั่ง
ส่วนขนาดของเครื่องยนต์แข่งขัน (ซีซี) แบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ประเภท คือ เครื่องยนต์ 800 ซีซี – 2 จังหวะ และเครื่องยนต์ 1200 ซีซี – 2 จังหวะ ปัจจุบันมีการผลิตเครื่องยนต์ 4 จังหะ – 1600 ซีซี แต่ยังคงถูกจัดลงแข่งในประเภท 1200 ซีซี – 2 จังหวะ
ประเภทและระดับชั้นของนักกีฬา
เจ็ตสกีแบ่งระดับนักกีฬาดังนี้
Beginner นักกีฬาในขั้นเริ่มต้น
Novice นักกีฬาระดับมือใหม่ที่มีประสบการณ์แล้ว
Expert นักกีฬาระดับกึ่งอาชีพ
Pro นักกีฬาระดับมืออาชีพ
ในบางกรณีการแข่งขันจะอนุญาตให้นักกีฬาลงแข่งรวมขั้นกันได้ เช่น
- Amateur นักกีฬาที่รวมขั้นระหว่าง Novice และ Expert
- Pro-Am นักกีฬาที่รวมขั้นระหว่าง Expert และ Pro


ระดับของการปรับแต่งเครื่องยนต์แข่งขันมี 4 ประเภท ดังนี้
- รุ่น Stock คือ โดยรวมแล้วเรือเจ็ตสกีจะต้องเป็นอุปกรณ์มาตรฐานเดิมจากโรงงาน
- รุ่น Limited สามารถเปลี่ยนอุปกรณ์อะไหล่ แต่ไม่สามารถ Modified ได้
- รุ่น Open สามารถเปลี่ยนอุปกรณ์ – อะไหล่ และ Modified ได้
- รุ่น Modified สามารถ Modified ได้อย่างเต็มที่ ภายใต้กฎการแข่งขันที่ปลอดภัย

การแข่งขันชนิดต่างๆ มีอยู่ด้วยกัน ๔ ประเภท ประกอบด้วย
Closed Course การแข่งขันที่หาผู้ชนะจาก ผู้ที่เข้าเส้นชัยเป็นอันดับแรก
Slalom การแข่งขันแบบจับเวลา
