ประวัติจังหวัดนครราชสีมาเมืองนครราชสีมา เป็นเมืองโบราณเมืองหนึ่งในอาณาจักรไทย แต่เดิมตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ในท้องที่อำเภอสูงเนิน ห่างจากตัวเมืองปัจจุบันประมาณ 31 กิโลเมตร คือ เมือง"โคราช" หรือ "โคราฆะ" กับเมือง "เสมา" ทั้งสองเมืองดังกล่าว เคยเจริญ รุ่งเรืองมาก ในสมัยขอมแต่ปัจจุบันเป็นเมืองร้าง ตั้งอยู่ริมฝั่งลำตะคอง สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช (พ.ศ. 2199-2231) โปรดให้สร้างเมืองสำคัญที่อยู่ชายแดน ให้มี ป้อม ปราการ จึงให้ย้ายเมืองที่ ตำบลโคราช อำเภอสูงเนิน มาสร้างเมืองที่มีป้อมปราการและคูน้ำล้อมรอบขึ้นใหม่ ในที่ซึ่งอยู่ ในปัจจุบัน แล้วเอานามเมืองใหม่ทั้งสอง คือเมืองเสมา กับเมืองโคราฆะ มาผูกเป็นนามเมืองใหม่ เรียกว่าเมืองนครราชสีมา แต่คนทั่วไป เรียกว่า เมืองโคราช เมืองนี้กำแพงก่อด้วยอิฐ มีใบเสมาเรียงรายตลอด มีป้อมกำแพงเมือง 15 ป้อม 4 ประตู สร้างด้วยศิลาแลง มีชื่อดังต่อไปนี้
