ปัจจุบันนี้ Memory Card มีใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลายอาทิ
- MMC Card (MultiMedia Cards) เป็นเมมโมรี่การ์ดรุ่นเก่าที่ไม่นิยมใช้งานแล้วในปัจจุบันเนื่องจากมีราคาแพงและมีความจุที่น้อยมาก ซึ่งความจุสูงสุดที่พบอยู่ที่ 512 MB เท่านั้นเอง
- SD Card (Secure digital card) เป็นเมมโมรี่การ์ดที่นิยมใช้งานกันในปัจจุบันซึ่งมีขนาดที่เล็กพกพาง่ายพร้อมกันนั้นยังมีความจุที่มากกว่าแบบ MMC และมีความเร็วในการโอนถ่ายข้อมูลที่สูงกว่าด้วย
- MicroSD card CF (CompactFlash card ) เป็นเมมโมรี่การ์ดชนิดเดียวกับ SD Card แต่จะมีขนาดที่เล็กกว่ามาก ใช้งานกับอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์สมัยใหม่
-MS (Memory stick) เป็นการ์ดที่ผลิตจากบริษัท Sony ที่มีความสามารถในการโอนถ่ายข้อมูลที่สูงมากแต่เสียอย่างเดียวคือไม่ค่อยนิยมนำมาใช้งานกันมากนักโดยการ์ด MS นั้นจะใช้งานกับผลิตภัณฑ์ของ Sony เท่านั้น และที่สำคัญมีราคาแพงกว่าเมมโมรี่ชนิดอื่นๆ
แต่เมมโมรี่การ์ดที่ได้รับความนิยมมากในปัจจุบันก็คือ SD Card ซึ่งได้มีการพัฒนาการใช้งานมาอย่างต่อเนื่องเป็น MicroSD card ที่มีขนาดเล็กกว่า SD Card และใช้งานร่วมกับอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์หลายชนิดในปัจจุบัน
ส่วน SD Card สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 3 แบบด้วยกันซึ่งจะแบ่งตามความสามารถในการจุข้อมูล ดังนี้
1. SD Card (Secure Digital) มีขนาดความจุตั้งแต่ 4 MB ถึง 4 GB จะเป็นการ์ดที่ใช้งานกับอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ทั่วไปที่ไม่ต้องการความจุมากมาย
2. SDHC Card (Secure Digital High Capacity) เป็นการ์ดที่มีหน่วยความจำจุ 4 GB ถึง 32GB นิยมใช้งานกับอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์รุ่นใหม่ที่ต้องการความจุในการเก็บข้อมูลที่มากขึ้น
3. SDXC Card (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) เป็นการ์ดที่มีหน่วยความจุสูงตั้งแต่ 32 GB จนถึง 2 TB ส่วนการ์ดรุ่นนี้เราจะพบการใช้งานกับกล้องถ่ายรูปที่ต้องการความละเอียดสูงโดยส่วนมากแล้วการ์ด SDXC Card จะเป็นการ์ดที่มีการโอนถ่ายข้อมูลที่สูงด้วยซึ่งจะอยู่ในระดับ 10 U 1
ระดับการโอนถ่ายข้อมูลและการเขียนของ SD Card นั้นก็ยังสามารถแบ่งเป็นระดับ โดยมีการอ้างอิงเป็นตัวเลขที่สามารถเห็นได้ตาม SD Card ซึ่งมีตัวเลขดังนี้
- Class 2 โอนถ่ายข้อมูลขั้นต่ำได้ที่ความเร็ว 2 MB / วินาที และมีความเร็วสูงสุดอยู่ที่ 8 MB / วินาที
- Class 4 โอนถ่ายข้อมูลขั้นต่ำได้ที่ความเร็ว 4 MB / วินาทีและมีความเร็วสูงสุดอยู่ที่ 15 MB / วินาทีเหมาะกับอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ทั่วไป ความเร็วระดับ 4 นี้จะเป็นความเร็วที่ใช้กับ Memory Card ทั่วไปที่ขายอยู่ในท้องตลาด
- Class 6 โอนถ่ายข้อมูลขั้นต่ำได้ที่ความเร็ว 6 MB / วินาที และมีความเร็วสูงสุดอยู่ที่ 20 MB / วินาที
- Class 10 โอนถ่ายข้อมูลขั้นต่ำได้ที่ความเร็ว 10 MB / วินาทีและมีความเร็วสูงสุดอยู่ที่ 30 MB / วินาที
