การศึกษาเกี่ยวกับการรับรู้ของความผิดปกติทางจิตเเละความเชื่อของบุคคลเกี่ยวกับประสิทธิภาพของการรักษา พบว่าถ้าความผิดปกติได้รับการยอมรับในระยะเเรกเเละการเข้าถึงข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เหมาะสมจะส่งผลให้การรักษาทางจิตมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น เพื่อกำหนดกลยุทธ์การส่งเสริมความรู้ความเข้าใจและเป็นแนวทางในการส่งเสริมสุขภาพจิตให้กับประชาชน (Jorm ,2006)
