มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเก่าแก่ที่สุดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ โดยมีอัตราการสอบแข่งขันเข้าเรียนมากที่สุดในภูมิภาค มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นเป็นหนึ่งในบรรดามหาวิทยาลัยชั้นนำของประเทศไทย และได้รับเลือกให้เป็นหนึ่งในเก้ามหาวิทยาลัยวิจัยแห่งชาติจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการในปี พ.ศ. 2552 มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ตั้งอยู่ถนนมิตรภาพ ตำบลในเมือง อำเภอเมืองขอนแก่นเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ก่อตั้งขึ้นและสถาปนาเป็นมหาวิทยาลัย โดยมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อให้การศึกษาชั้นสูงขยายออกไปถึงภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งภูมิภาคที่สำคัญที่สุดส่วนหนึ่งของประเทศ ซึ่งต่อไปจะเป็นผลดีต่อการพัฒนายกฐานะความเป็นอยู่ของประชาชนในภูมิภาคนี้ พระองค์เสด็จฯมาทรงประกอบพิธีเปิดมหาวิทยาลัยเมื่อวันที่ 20 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2510 และได้รับการสถาปนาขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 25 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2509
