พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ น่าน เดิมเป็นที่ประทับของพระเจ้าสุริยพงษ์ผลิตเดชฯ พระเจ้าน่าน ทรงสร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2446 เป็นอาคารก่ออิฐถือปูน 2 ชั้น มีมุขด้านหน้า หลังคามุงด้วยไม้แป้นเกล็ด ครั้นเมื่อเจ้ามหาพรหมสุรธาดา เจ้าผู้ครองนครน่านองค์สุดท้ายถึงพิราลัย เจ้านายบุตรหลานของเจ้าผู้ครองนครน่านจึงได้มอบหอคำหลังนี้พร้อมที่ดินให้แก่รัฐบาล เพื่อใช้เป็นอาคารศาลากลางจังหวัดน่าน ต่อมาเมื่อกระทรวงมหาดไทยได้ก่อสร้างอาคารศาลากลางจังหวัดหลังใหม่ขึ้น กรมศิลปากรจึงได้ขอรับมอบอาคารเพื่อใช้เป็นสถานที่จัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ น่าน ขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2517 และประกาศจัดตั้งอย่างเป็นทางการขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2528 โดยสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินเป็นองค์ประธานประกอบพิธีเปิดอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 14 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2530
