เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 กุมภาพันธ์ 2509 ท

เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 กุมภาพันธ์ 2509 ที่บ้านจันนา อ.ควนขนุน จ.พัทลุง
เป็นบุตรของนายวณิช นางยุพา สงสมพันธุ์
เรียนที่วัดไทรโกบ อ.ควนขนุน จนจบ ป.4 แล้วจึงไปเรียนต่อที่โรงเรียนวัดพิกุลทอง
อ.เมืองพัทลุง จนจบ ป.7 จากนั้นศึกษาต่อระดับมัธยมศึกษาที่ โรงเรียนพัทลุง อ.เมืองพัทลุง จนจบ ม. 6 เอนทรานซ์เข้าเรียนต่อได้ที่คณะวิทยาการจัดการ (เอกคอมพิวเตอร์ธุรกิจ) มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ เรียนอยู่ระยะหนึ่ง และสอบเข้าศึกษาในคณะเดิม (เอกรัฐประศาสนศาสตร์) อยู่ 3 ปี จึงตัดสินใจออกจากมหาวิทยาลัยเพื่อเขียนหนังสือ
เริ่มสนใจการอ่านวรรณกรรมมาตั้งแต่พออ่านออกเขียนได้ เพราะบิดามารดาเป็นครู และที่บ้านมีหนังสือให้เลือกอ่านได้หลายเล่ม
กนกพงศ์ เกิดและเติบโตขึ้นมาในยุคที่มีความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองในพื้นที่ภาคใต้ โดยเฉพาะแถบเทือกเขาบรรทัดอันเป็นถิ่นกำเนิด เป็นความขัดแย้งระหว่างกองกำลังของรัฐกับกองทัพปลดแอกประชาชนแห่งประเทศไทย(ทปท.) ของพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์แห่งประเทศไทย (พคท.) เป็นความขัดแย้งอย่างรุนแรง จากการปราบปรามแบบเหวี่ยงแห และมาตรการในการกำจัดแบบตัดรากถอนโคนและการทารุณกรรมของฝ่ายรัฐบาลที่เรียกว่า "ถังแดง" และการตัดใบหูของศพเพื่อแลกกับเงินรางวัลของกองกำลังพลเรือน ตำรวจ ทหาร ที่เกิดขึ้นเพื่อปราบปรามผู้ที่มีความเห็นขัดแย้งกับรัฐหรือเจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐโดยเฉพาะ ก่อนที่จะมีนโยบายการเมืองนำการทหารตามคำสั่งนายกรัฐมนตรี ที่ 66/2523 สมัยพลเอกเปรม ติณสูลานนท ์เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี เรื่องราวเหล่านี้จึงปรากฏอยู่ในงานเขียนของเขา โดยเฉพาะเรื่องสั้น "สะพานขาด" ที่ได้รับรางวัลช่อการะเกดยอดเยี่ยมจากบรรณาธิการ สุชาติ สวัสดิ์ศรี ในปี พ.ศ.2532 นอกจากนั้นยังมีเรื่อง "ยามเช้า" และ "ในห้วงน้ำกว้าง" เป็นต้น

เป็นสมาชิกยุคก่อตั้งของ "กลุ่มนาคร" กลุ่มทำงานด้านศิลปะวรรณกรรมอันสำคัญของภาคใต้
สำหรับผลงานเรื่องสั้นเรื่องแรกได้แก่ "ดุจตะวันอันเจิดจ้า" ตีพิมพ์ในมติชนสุดสัปดาห์ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2527 จากนั้นมีเรื่องสั้นตีพิมพ์ตามหน้านิตยสารสม่ำเสมอในฐานะนักเขียนที่มาแรงที่สุดในยุคนั้น
ปี พ.ศ. 2531 มีผลงานร่วมเล่มลำดับแรก เป็นรวมบทกวี "ป่าน้ำค้าง" สำนักพิมพ์นาคร
ปี พ.ศ. 2532 ออกหนังสือรวมเรื่องสั้นชุดแรกเรื่อง "สะพานขาด" สำนักพิมพ์นกสีเหลือง ได้รับรางวัลเรื่องสั้นช่อการะเกด และคัดเลือกแปลเป็นภาษาญี่ปุ่น
ปี พ.ศ. 2533 เรื่องสั้น "โลกใบเล็กของซัลมาน" ได้รับรางวัลเรื่องสั้นช่อการะเกดอีกครั้งในปี 2539 ตามด้วยผลงานชุดที่สอง "คนใบเลี้ยงเดี่ยว" รวมเรื่องสั้นสำนักพิมพ์นกสีเหลือง
ปี พ.ศ. 2535 รวมเรื่องสั้นชุดที่ 3 "แผ่นดินอื่น" ของสำนักพิมพ์นาคร คว้ารางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียน หรือ ซีไรต์ ในปี 2539
