เจดีย์ชเวดากอง เป็นเจดีย์คู่บ้านคู่เมืองของชาวพม่าคำว่า ชเว(Shwe) หมายถึง ทองคำ ส่วน ดากอง มาจากคำว่า Dagonหรือ ตะเกิง ซึ่งเป็นนามเดิมของนครย่างกุ้ง “ชเวดากอง” แปลว่า “เจดีย์ทองแห่งเมืองดากอง” มีประวัติการสร้างเก่าแก่ยาวนานกว่า2,500ปีตั้งแต่ครั้งนครย่างกุ้งยังเป็นของชาวมอญ ชาวพม่าเชื่อว่าเป็นสถานที่บรรจุพระเกศาธาตุจำนวน8เส้นของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า และเครื่องอัฐบริขารของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าในอดีตอีก3พระองค์

การดูแลรักษาเจดีย์ชเวดากอง ในทุกๆ 50ปี จะนำยอดฉัตรของพระเจดีย์ลงมาบูรณะ และอนุญาตให้ประชาชน นำเครื่องสักการะ คือ เครื่องประดับอัญมณี แก้ว แหวน เงินทอง เพชร นิล จินดา มาถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา เพื่อขึ้นติดไว้บนยอดฉัตรของพระเจดีย์
