ที่ 9 ตุลาคม 2527 สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนีทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ รับสมาคมเปตองและโปรวังซาลแห่งประเทศไทย ไว้ในพระราชูปถัมภ์ เมื่อวันที่ 22 เมษายน 2530 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อสมาคมเปตอง และโปรวังซาลเป็นสหพันธ์เปตองแห่งประเทศไทยในพระราชูปถัมภ์สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี ต่อม่ได้แก้ไขข้อบังคับสหพันธ์ฯ เพื่อให้เป็นไปตาม พ.ร.บ. การกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทยจึงเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นสหพันธ์เปตองแห่งประเทศไทยเป็น “สมาคมเปตองแห่งประเทศไทย” เมื่อวันที่ 12 มิถุนายน 2543 และได้รับการรับรองจากการกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทย สนับสนุนงบประมาณเป็นเงินอุดหนุนสมาคมฯ ประจำปีจากรัฐบาลตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ 2538 เป็นต้นมา จนถึงปัจจุบัน
