Political leadership and problem resolution

Political power wielders may be viewed as some people who have power and leadership. But that is not necessarily always the case. A holder of power position may appear to possess power and leadership, but in reality that particular individual may be just a puppet and lack the required attribute of a leader who has to have courage or at times gallantry in tackling problems in a daring and swift manner. There are those persons who hold power position but are slow in response to crises and oftentimes are indecisive and can be easily swayed by persuasion. Some people who thought that by listening to the opinions of both sides, pros and cons, and ended up agreeing with the ideas of both side is an act of being democratic can be dead wrong.

A person with leadership will have to possess the following attributes.
First and foremost is the confidence that he or she can do the job. If the person does not have the knowledge or the making of someone who can carry on the duty assigned, he or she cannot just feign being confident. Sooner or later, the foolish comments or acts would give them out. Confidence can only come about by having the knowledge and the experiences. Mere theories which many academicians would have would not be sufficient. The power wielder who stayed on the ivory tower can never deliver. That is why some people like to make a mockery of professors with ideals which at times are outlandish. But for those who have an empty head about the job assigned, having advisors at his or her side would be an alternative. But that particular individual must be able to at least perceive of what is going on otherwise he or she will be at the mercy of the advisor who virtually would be turned into the person who makes decisions.

Secondly, the person who is supposed to display leadership must posses courage, daring to come up with decisions even if unpopular. It is long known that big business tycoons usually are those who have the guts to take risk. Whoever cling to a 100% sure target can at best remain as owner of a grocery store. But the risk based on guts must be calculated risk not chances taken wildly in the manner of a gambler in a poker game. Some people who hold positions cannot make any judgment, let alone coming up with courageous decisions. Weak leaders such as those kings or emperors who fell under the influence of the court ladies or the eunuchs saw their kingdom or empire perished in front of their very eyes. Politicians who are slow to react because of the bureaucratic habits of having to wait for reports would not make up a good leader.

Third, one who is a good leader must have the sanction of being ethical and moralistic. This is related to the element of political legitimacy and moral authority. A tyrant may last for a while but all tyrants would eventually meet a deplorable demise. A leader who is guided by ethical and moral principle would be confident in what he nor she is doing. This would be doubly true if the policies advocated were made on a bona fide basis and for the good of the people. Hence a sense of noblesse oblige would help enhance leadership in the person who wields political power.

Last, a political leader must also have a personality befitting a leader. Physical deform would not bode well for a leader but one American president gave his orders from a wheel-chair. However, the fact that he had to move around in a wheel-chair was also hidden from public eyes. A person with a powerful voice may also help form a personality of a leader. As power means the ability to put ideas into other people's heads and minds, verbal capacity coming out from a good personality would be helpful.

But all these would amount to one important qualification known in Thai as baramee. Baramee is Thai version of charisma. It denotes a concept of acceptability of the person as a leader because of the various attributes. It also connotes a concept of divine quality due to the accumulation of merit by the particular individual. But in the final analysis, political leadership is an attribute which has a combined elements which comes by nature and nurture in a particular person. But of most importance, the person psychologically must believe or be made to believe that he or she is the one who has been chosen to lead.
