กลุ่มมิตรผล ได้ขยายฐานการผลิตสู่สาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว (สปป.ลาว) ภายใต้ชื่อบริษัท น้ำตาลมิตรลาว จำกัด โดยได้รับสัมปทานพื้นที่ปลูกอ้อยและก่อสร้างโรงงานผลิตน้ำตาลจากรัฐบาลของ สปป.ลาว เมื่อเดือนมีนาคม พ.ศ. 2549 เป็นพื้นที่ประมาณ 62,500 ไร่ อายุสัมปทาน 40 ปี และสามารถต่อสัมปทานสิทธิ์ได้อีก 20 ปี ใช้เงินลงทุนเบื้องต้นจำนวน 2,300 ล้านบาท ผลิตน้ำตาลดิบคุณภาพสูงด้วยเทคโนโลยีที่ทันสมัยเช่นเดียวกับที่ใช้ในโรงงานผลิตน้ำตาลขนาดใหญ่ของโลก ภายใต้ระบบการจัดการมาตรฐานสากล ปัจจุบันมีกำลังการผลิตเฉลี่ย 5,000 ตันอ้อย/วันหรือ 500,000 ตันอ้อย/ปี คิดเป็นผลผลิตน้ำตาลประมาณ 60,000 ตัน/ปี น้ำตาลที่ผลิตได้ส่วนใหญ่ส่งไปจำหน่าย ยังประเทศในกลุ่มสหภาพยุโรป
ในปีพ.ศ. 2554 กลุ่มมิตรผล ได้พัฒนาธุรกิจพลังงานทดแทนต่อยอดจากอุตสาหกรรมอ้อยและน้ำตาล ด้วยการลงทุนในธุรกิจไฟฟ้าชีวมวล ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นโรงไฟฟ้าชีวมวลแห่งแรกในสปป.ลาว โดยนำชานอ้อยที่เหลือจากกระบวนการผลิตน้ำตาลมาใช้เป็นเชื้อเพลิงหลักเพื่อผลิตไอน้ำและกระแสไฟฟ้า สร้างความเป็นต้นแบบของการนำวัสดุเหลือใช้ทางการเกษตรมาพัฒนาต่อยอดสู่ธุรกิจพลังงานทดแทนในสปป.ลาว
โรงไฟฟ้าชีวมวลแห่งนี้ ตั้งอยู่ในแขวงสะหวันเขต สปป.ลาว มีกำลังการผลิตไฟฟ้าเริ่มแรกที่ 9 เมกะวัตต์ และมีแผนการจะเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 20 เมกะวัตต์ในอนาคต ปัจจุบัน ได้ลงนามสัญญาจำหน่ายไฟฟ้าให้กับรัฐวิสาหกิจไฟฟ้าลาว 3 เมกะวัตต์และจะเพิ่มเป็น 8 เมกะวัตต์ในอนาคตอันใกล้ เพื่อส่งต่อไปยังชุมชน
