เดิมชื่อ “วัดพรหมมินทร์” เป็นวัดหลวง ตั้งอยู่ในเขตพระนครดังปรากฏชื่อ ตำบลในเวียงในปัจจุบัน เจ้าเจตบุตรพรหมมินทร์ สร้างเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2139 ต่อมาอีกประมาณ 300 ปี มีการบูรณะครั้งใหญ่ ในสมัยเจ้าอนันตวรฤทธิ์เดช เมื่อ พ.ศ.2410 (ปลายสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4) ใช้เวลาซ่อมแซมนานถึง 7 ปี
