โครงการปริวรรตธรรมคัมภีร์ใบลาน
วรรณกรรมและโบราณคดี เป็นทรัพยากรวัฒนธรรมที่ทรงคุณค่า ในฐานะที่เป็นส่วนประกอบของระบบวัฒนธรรมในสังคมมนุษย์ ที่สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความเจริญก้าวหน้าทางด้านวัตถุธรรมและนามธรรมที่บรรพบุรุษได้คิดค้นและสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นมา เป็นหลักฐานทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ ที่แสดงถึงเอกลักษณ์และความเป็นมาของชุมชน เป็นสิ่งที่สามารถนำมาจัดการเพื่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อการดำรงชีวิตและกระบวนการพัฒนาในด้านต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการสร้างองค์ความรู้ การประเมินคุณค่า การฟื้นฟู และการสร้างความรู้ขึ้นมาใหม่เพื่อให้เป็นทุนทางสังคม ที่ก่อให้เกิดการสร้างวัฒนธรรมที่ให้คุณค่ากับการเรียนรู้และการพัฒนาศักยภาพของชุมชน ในบรรดาวรรณกรรมและโบราณคดีประเภทต่างๆ ที่มีอยู่ในสังคมไทยนั้น วรรณกรรมและโบราณคดีทางพระพุทธศาสนา นับว่าเป็นทรัพยากรวัฒนธรรมอีกประเภทหนึ่งที่มีคุณค่าและความสำคัญต่อการสร้างระบบคิด ภูมิปัญญา และรากฐานทางวัฒนธรรมของไทย เพราะมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับทรัพยากรด้านวัตถุอันได้แก่ โบสถ์ เจดีย์ วิหาร คัมภีร์ใบลาน สมุดข่อย ธรรมาสน์ฯลฯ ที่สร้างขึ้นด้วยความวิจิตรงดงามและสติ ปัญญา อันล้ำเลิศของบุรพาจารย์ และทรัพยากรด้านนามธรรม อันได้แก่ องค์ความรู้ ภูมิปัญญา คติธรรม ความเชื่อ ฯลฯ ที่ล้วนมีความหมายและความสำคัญต่อ การเรียนรู้และการดำรงวิถีชีวิตในสังคม
สำหรับประเทศไทยนั้น ดินแดนล้านนาหรือภาคเหนือตอนบนของประเทศ พบว่ามีวรรณกรรมและโบราณคดีทางพุทธศาสนาอย่างมากมาย มากกว่าที่พบในภาคอื่นๆ ของประเทศ โดยกระจัดกระจายอยู่ตามวัดและสถานที่ต่างๆ ใน ๘ - ๙ จังหวัดภาคเหนือตอนบน ซึ่งจากการศึกษาสำรวจคัมภีร์และวรรณกรรมล้านนาของสถาบันวิจัยสังคม มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ที่สำรวจตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๖ - ๒๕๒๖ ใน ๕๒๕ วัด ๘ จังหวัดภาคเหนือตอนบนพบว่า มีคัมภีร์วรรณกรรมล้านนาถึง ๔๑๐,๗๗๕ ผูก/ฉบับ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นวรรณกรรมทางด้านพระพุทธศาสนา นอกนั้นเป็นวรรณกรรมในด้าน อื่นๆ เช่น นิทานพื้นบ้าน กฎหมายโบราณ ยาสมุนไพร โหราศาสตร์ จริยศาสตร์ ลัทธิพิธีกรรม เป็นต้น
คัมภีร์ใบลาน สามารถเรียกได้ ๒ แบบ คือ ใบลานยาว เราเรียกว่า หนังสือผูก ส่วนใบลานสั้น เรียกว่าหนังสือก้อม ซึ่งหมายถึง ใบลานที่ใช้บันทึกเรื่องราวต่างๆ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับพุทธศาสนา
ประวัติศาสตร์ชาดก หรือธรรมค่าว ซึ่งจะใช้ตัวอักษรธรรมล้านนา (ตัวเมือง) จารึกลงบนใบลาน โดยใช้เหล็ก

๒๒ นิ้ว ใช้จารึกทั้งสองหน้า ก่อนจะจารต้องมีการตีเส้นบรรทัดก่อนโดยทั่วไปนิยมใช้หน้าลานละ ๕ บรรทัด จารตัวหนังสือใต้เส้นบรรทัดเหล่านั้นเมื่อจารข้อความเสร็จแล้ว ต้องลูบลานนั้นด้วยเขม่าไฟผสมด้วยน้ำมันยางทำให้ทั่ว เพื่อให้สีดำของเขม่าไฟเข้าไปฝังอยู่ในร่องที่เป็นรูปตัวอักษรไว้แล้ว การลูบนั้นต้องใช้ลูกประคบถูไปมาจนทั่ว และจึงใช้ทรายละเอียดตากแดดจนร้อนมาโรยลงบนลาน แล้วใช้ลูกประคบสะอาดถูบนทรายเพื่อลบเขม่าไฟผสมน้ำมันยางออกให้หมดเมื่อจารใบลานจบเรื่องและทำการลบตัวอักษรแล้ว การนำมาเข้าผูกจะมีใบลานประมาณ ๒๔ ลาน ถ้าเป็นผูกเล็กจำนวนลานก็จะน้อยกว่านี้ อาจมีใบลานเปล่าเป็นปกหน้าปกหลังก็ได้ ใช้เชือกถักเรียกว่า “สายสยอง” ร้อยตามร่องที่เจาะไว้ เรื่องหนึ่งๆ จะมีจำนวนผูกที่ไม่เท่ากัน บางเรื่องอาจมีเพียง ๕-๖ ผูกเท่านั้น แต่บางเรื่องอาจมีถึง๓๐ ผูกก็ได้ และในแต่ละเรื่องนับเป็นคัมภีร์หนึ่ง ผู้สร้างคัมภีร์นิยมตกแต่งคัมภีร์ที่ขอบด้านข้างของใบลานและใบปกหน้าปกหลัง รวมทั้งไม้ประกับทั้งด้านหน้าและด้านหลัง จะนิยมการจัดทำไม้ประกับเหล่านั้นให้เป็นลวดลายศิลปะต่างๆ เช่น การปิดทอง ประดับมุก หรือประดับกระจก เป็นต้น และผ้าที่จะนำมาใช้ห่อคัมภีร์ก็จะเป็นผ้าอย่างดี เช่นผ้าไหม เป็นต้น และจะเรียกหรือนับคัมภีร์ใบลาน
