เดิมชื่อของท่าน คอร์ราโด เฟโรชี Corrado Feroci เป็นชาวอิตาลีสัญชาติไทย ถือว่าเป็นปูชนียบุคคลคนหนึ่งของไทย โดยได้สร้างคุณูปการในทางศิลปะจนเป็นที่รู้จักกว้างขวาง เป็นทั้งผู้ก่อตั้งและครูสอนศิลปะในมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร จนเป็นที่รักใคร่และนับถือทั้งในหมู่คณาศิษย์และอาจารย์ และได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นปูชนียบุคคลของมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนี้ ท่านมีผลงานที่โดดเด่นหลายอย่างในประเทศไทย ได้แก่ พระราชานุสาวรีย์ของสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลที่ 6) ที่สวนลุมพินี และอนุสาวรีย์ท้าวสุรนารี
ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 15 กันยายน พ.ศ.2435 (ค.ศ.1892) ที่เมืองฟลอเรนซ์ ประเทศอิตาลี นามเดิมคือ คอร์ราโด เฟโรจี ตรงกับรัชกาล 6 ในขณะนั้น รัฐบาลประเทศสยาม มีนโยบายขอให้รัฐบาลประเทศอิตาลีคัดเลือกประติมากรผู้มีฝีมือมารับราชการปฏิบัติงานหมีคำไม่สุภาพ และถ่ายทอดความรู้แก่ชาวสยาม ให้มีความรู้ทางด้านศิลปะทัดเทียมกับชาวตะวันตก ตามพระราชประสงค์ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้า เจ้าอยู่หัว ปี พ.ศ.2466 ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี จึงได้รับมอบหมายและเดินทางมารับราชการกรมศิลปากร กระทรวงวัง ในตำแหน่งช่างปั้น ที่ประเทศสยาม ในวันที่ 14 มกราคม พ.ศ.2466 เมื่ออายุท่านย่าง 32 ปี ผลงานที่ทำให้ท่านมีชื่อเสียงจนได้รับเลือกมารับราชการในประเทศสยาม คือ ประติมากรรมอนุสาวรีย์สงคราม ที่เมืองปอร์โตเฟอราอิโอ ทางด้านชีวิตครอบครัว ก่อนเดินทางมาประเทศไทย ท่านเคยแต่งงานมาครั้งหนึ่งแต่ได้แยกทางกัน และท่านเดินทางมากับภริยาใหม่ คือ นางฟันนี วิเวียนนี และได้ใช้ชีวิตร่วมกันในประเทศสยาม จนถึงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ครอบครัวขอท่านจึงกลับประเทศอิตาลีพร้อมลูกชาย และลูกสาว แต่ท่านกลับอยู่ประเทศสยามด้วยความเสียสละเพื่องานศิลปะ และด้านศิลปะศึกษาที่ท่านรัก ท่านแยกทางกันแต่มีโอกาสได้พบกันเมื่อท่านลางานเพื่อเยี่ยมเยือนครอบครัวในบางปี

ในปี พ.ศ.2477 กรมศิลปากรจึงจัดตั้งโรงเรียนประณีตศิลปกรรม โดยมีศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์เป็นผู้อำนวยการและเป็นผู้สอนวิชาศิลปะทั้งทางด้านทฤษฎี และปฏิบัติ โรงเรียนประณีตศิลปกรรมได้ยกฐานะเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ในปี พ.ศ.2486 จนถึงปัจจุบัน นับเป็นโรงเรียนสอนศิลปะสากลแห่งแรกของประเทศสยามและเอเชียอาคเนย์
