แบดมินตัน (Badminton) เป็นกีฬาที่ได้รับการวิจารณ์เป็นอย่างมาก เพราะไม่มีหลักฐานที่แน่ชัดถึงที่มาของกีฬาประเภทนี้ คงมีแต่หลักฐานบางอย่างที่ทำให้ทราบว่า กีฬาแบดมินตันมีเล่นกันในยุโรป โดยเฉพาะในประเทศอังกฤษ ตอนปลายศตวรรษที่ 17 และจากภาพสีน้ำมันหลายภาพได้ยืนยันว่า กีฬาแบดมินตันเล่นกันอย่างแพร่หลายในพระราชวงศ์ของราชสำนักต่าง ๆ ในทวีปยุโรป แม้ว่าจะเรียกกันภายใต้ชื่ออื่นก็ตาม

สำหรับการเล่นแบดมินตันในระยะแรกไม่ได้มีกฎเกณฑ์ตายตัว เพียงแต่เป็นการตีโต้ลูกกันไปมาไม่ให้ลูกตกพื้นเท่านั้น ส่วนเส้นแบ่งแดนก็ใช้ตาข่ายผูกโยงระหว่างต้นไม้สองต้นไม่ได้คำนึงถึงเรื่องต่ำสูง เล่นกันข้างละไม่น้อยกว่า 4 คน ส่วนมาจะเล่นทีมละ 6 ถึง 9 คน ผู้เล่นสามารถแต่งตัวได้ตามสบาย
