ที่มาของรำวงมาตรฐาน

ต่อมาการเล่น “รำโทน” ได้พัฒนามาเป็น “รำวง” ลักษณะการรำวง คือ มีโต๊ะตั้งกลางวง ชาย – หญิงรำเป็นคู่ ๆ เดินเป็นวงกลมอย่างมีระเบียบ แต่ยังคงยึดจังหวะโทนเป็นหลัก มีการ ขับร้องเพลงประกอบในการรำ เรียกว่า “รำวงพื้นบ้าน” การรำวงนี้นิยมเล่นในงานเทศกาล หรือเล่นกันเองด้วยความสนุกสนาน เนื้อหาสาระของเพลงรำวงพื้นเมือง นอกจากให้ความบันเทิงแล้วยังสอดแทรกอารมณ์ ความรู้ ขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี เช่น เพลงช่อมาลี เธอรำช่างน่าดู หล่อจริงนะดารา ตามองตา ยวนยาเหล ใกล้เข้าไปอีกนิด ฯลฯ

ต่อมาในสมัยรัฐบาล จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม พ.ศ. 2487 ได้มอบหมายให้กรมศิลปากร ปรับปรุงการเล่นรำวงพื้นบ้าน ให้มีระเบียบเรียบร้อย เป็นแบบฉบับอันดีงามของนาฏศิลป์ไทยและเพื่อเป็นการอนุรักษ์ศิลปะการละเล่นพื้นเมือง กรมศิลปากรจึงแต่งบทร้องและทำนองเพลงขึ้นใหม่ 4 เพลง คือ งามแสงเดือน ชาวไทย คืนเดือนหงาย และรำมาซิมารำ พร้อมทั้งปรับปรุงเครื่องดนตรีที่ใช้บรรเลงประกอบการเล่นรำวงมาเป็นวงปี่พาทย์หรือวงดนตรีสากล
