แหล่งข่าวจากกระทรวงเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศและการสื่อสาร (ไอซีที) เปิดเผย "ประชาชาติธุรกิจ" ว่า ม.ร.ว.ปรีดิยาธร เทวกุล รองนายกรัฐมนตรี ต้องการเปิดตัวกระทรวงดิจิทัลเพื่อเศรษฐกิจและสังคมซึ่งเป็นกระทรวงใหม่ที่จะขึ้นมาทำหน้าที่หลักในการขับเคลื่อนนโยบายเศรษฐกิจดิจิทัลของรัฐบาล โดยเป็นการเปลี่ยนโครงสร้างเดิมของกระทรวงไอซีทีใหม่ให้ทันในวันที่ 4 ธ.ค. 2557 นี้ เนื่องจากเป็นช่วงวันมหามงคลจึงได้สั่งการให้เร่งกระบวนการทุกอย่างให้เสร็จทันวันดังกล่าว แต่ยังไม่ชัดเจนนักว่าทุกอย่างจะเสร็จทันหรือไม่ เพราะยังมีโครงสร้างหลายส่วนที่ไม่นิ่ง อาทิ สถานะของสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ (สสช.) ที่คณะทำงานดิจิทัลอีโคโนมีต้องการให้โอนย้ายไปสังกัดสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีและยกระดับองค์กรให้ใหญ่ขึ้น ให้มีรูปแบบคล้ายสภาพัฒน์ คือมีทั้งการเก็บข้อมูลพื้นฐานและการต่อยอดข้อมูลในเชิงวิเคราะห์และคาดการณ์เศรษฐกิจ ขณะที่กระทรวงไอซีทีเห็นว่าสถิติเป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญของดิจิทัลอีโคโนมีจึงน่าจะอยู่กับกระทรวงใหม่มากกว่า หรือกรณีสำนักงาน กสทช. หรือคณะกรรมการกิจการกระจายเสียง กิจการโทรทัศน์ และกิจการโทรคมนาคมแห่งชาติ ที่ปัจจุบันมีสถานะเป็นองค์กรอิสระ แต่โครงสร้างใหม่ลดสถานะเป็น "องค์การมหาชน" และมาอยู่ใต้สังกัดกระทรวงใหม่ ซึ่งคาดว่า กสทช.ไม่ยอมแน่นอน และกำลังเจรจากันอยู่ แต่ถ้าจบไม่ทันวันที่ 4 ธ.ค.นี้ก็เป็นไปได้ว่าจะขยับไปเพื่อให้เสร็จในวันที่ 4 ม.ค. 2558 ถือเป็นของขวัญปีใหม่ให้คนไทยด้วย
