อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตา เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติทางทะเลแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย มีชื่อเสียงทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์และความสวยงามของธรรมชาติ ตั้งอยู่ในทะเลอันดามัน ห่างจากตัวเมืองสตูลประมาณ 40 กิโลเมตร และห่างจากฝั่งที่ท่าเรือปากบารา 22 กิโลเมตร ซึ่งได้รับยกย่องจากองค์การยูเนสโก ให้เป็นอุทยานมรดกแห่งอาเซียน (ASEAN Heritage Parks and Reserves) โดยสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวในเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตา เช่น เกาะตะรุเตา เกาะใหญ่ที่สุดของอุทยาน สภาพพื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภูเขาที่มีสภาพเป็นป่าดิบชื้น ซึ่งยังมีพรรณไม้และสัตว์ป่าที่น่าสนใจจำนวนไม่น้อย นอกจากนี้ ยังมีอ่าวน้อยใหญ่ที่มีชายหาดสวยงามอยู่หลายแห่ง

ทั้งนี้เกาะตะรุเตายังมีประวัติศาสตร์ที่น่าจดจำ ในปี พ.ศ. 2479 รัฐบาลกำหนดให้เกาะแห่งนี้เป็นสถานที่จัดตั้งนิคมฝึกอาชีพ และเป็นสถานที่กักกันนักโทษ โดยมีการจัดสร้างอาคารที่ทำการ บ้านพักของผู้คุม เรือนนอนนักโทษ และโรงฝึกอาชีพขึ้น แต่ต่อมากรมราชทัณฑ์ได้ประกาศยกเลิกนิคมฝึกอาชีพตะรุเตา และหลังจากนั้นเกาะตะรุเตาก็ถูกทิ้งร้างเป็นเวลา 26 ปี จนกระทั่งวันที่ 19 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2517 ได้ถูกประกาศจัดตั้งอุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตาขึ้น
