การให้ทานมีความหมายอย่างกว้างว่าการสละบริจาคสิ่งของอะไรแก่ใครๆ หรือแก่องค์การ อะไรๆ ด้วยการให้เปล่า มิใช่เป็นการซื้อขายแลกเปลี่ยนหรือให้เช่า และมีความหมายตลอดถึงการให้ กำลังกาย กำลังวาจา กำลังความคิด ความรู้ ช่วยในทางต่างๆ สรุปแล้วมี 2 อย่าง คือ อามิสทาน ให้พัสดุสิ่งของอันเป็นกำลังทรัพย์ภายนอกต่างๆ ธรรมทาน ให้ธรรมอย่างบอกศิลปวิทยาให้ บอกทางของความดีความชั่ว

ทานคือการให้ การสละกำจัดความโลภ ทานที่นับว่าจะอำนวยผลอันไพบูลย์ต้องประกอบ ด้วยเจตนาสมบัติ ถึงพร้อมด้วยเจตนา คือเจตนาดี แต่ก่อนให้ กำลังให้ และให้แล้ว ศีลได้แก่ เจตนางดเว้นความชั่วตามองค์สิขาบทที่ท่านบัญญัติไว้ ผู้มีศีลย่อมปรากฏเป็นผู้มีการงาน วาจา และ อาชีพอันชอบ ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้ให้อภัยแก่สรรพสัตว์ ย่อมได้รับความปลอดภัยเป็นผล ผู้มีศีลย่อมได้รับผลคือความงามด้วยประการทั้ง ปวง ภาวนาได้แก่การปฏิบัติอบรมให้สมาธิ(Meditation)และปัญญาเกิดขึ้น การปฏิบัติอบรมให้เกิดสมาธิเรียกว่า สมถภาวนา ได้แก่การปฏิบัติหัดจิต ให้แน่แน่ว ด้วยการบังคับจิตให้คิดเป็นอารมณ์เดียว บุญให้ความสุขแช่มชื่นตราบเท่าถึงสิ้นชีวิต

ศีลเป็นตัวปกติภาพของคนโดยแท้แต่คนโดยมาก มักควบคุมตัวเองไว้ไม่ได้ จึงรักษา ปกติภาพของตนไว้ไม่ได้ พระพุทธเจ้าจึงทรงบัญญัติศีลเป็นขอบเขตของความประพฤติไว้ เพื่อช่วยให้คนรักษาปกติภาพของตนไว้นั่น เอง ส่วนที่ต้องรับจากพระนั้นก็เป็นเพียงวิธีชักนำอย่างหนึ่ง เพราะโดยตรง ศีลนั้นต้องรับจากใจของตนเอง คือใจของตนเองต้องเกิดวิรัติทั้ง 3 ข้อ เมื่อใจมีวิรัติขึ้น แม้เพียงข้อใด ข้อหนึ่ง ก็เกิดเป็นศีลขึ้นทันที วิรัติ 3 นั้นคือ ความเว้นได้ในท้นทีที่เผชิญหน้ากับวัตถุ 1 ความเว้นได้ด้วย ตั้งใจถือศีลไว้ 1 และความเว้นได้เด็ดขาดทีเดียว 1

เมื่อจักถือศีลก็ไม่ต้องไปที่ไหนอื่น ถือที่กายวาจา จิตนี้แหละ วัดก็ดี ป่าก็ดี เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่ให้ความ สะดวกแก่การถือเท่านั้น เพราะฉะนั้น เมื่อหวังจะถือให้สะดวก จึงสมควรไปวัด เข้าป่า หรือสถานที่อัน สมควรอื่นๆ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงศีลเป็นคำสอน ศีลคือปกติ กาย วาจา และจิต ถ้าปล่อยกาย วาจา จิตให้ผิดปกติแม้จะรับสิกขาบท 5 ข้อก็ตาม ถ้าไม่ปฏิบัติตามสิกขาบทก็ถือศีลไม่ได้ เพราะสิกขาบท หยาบกว่าศีล เมื่อทำดีอย่างหยาบๆ ยังไม่ได้ แล้วจะทำดีอย่างละเอียดได้อย่างไรการรับศีลนั้นแม้จะ เป็นการรับจากพระภิกษุ แต่ถ้าเป็นการรับเพียงด้วยปาก ใจไม่ได้คิดงดเว้นอะไร ก็ไม่เกิดเป็นศีลได้ ตรงกันข้าม ถึงแม้มิได้รับศีลจากพระภิกษุแต่มีใจงดเว้น ก็เกิดเป็นศีลได้

ศีลธรรม สามารถระงับภัยต่างๆ ได้แน่โดยเฉพาะภัยที่คนก่อให้เกิดแก่กันเอง ภัยที่คนก่อ ขึ้นนี้อาจทำให้ดินฟ้าอากาศแปรปรวนไปได้ด้วย เช่นเมื่อตัดไม้ทำลายป่าเสียหายกันโดยมาก ไม่ปลูกขึ้นทดแทนให้พอกัน ก็ทำให้ เกิดความแห้งแล้ง เป็นต้น ฉะนั้นคนเรานี้เองเมื่อไม่มีศีลธรรมก็เป็นผู้ก่อภัยให้ เกิดแก่กัน ตลอดถึงเป็นผู้ก่อความวิปริตแปรปรวนแห่งธรรมชาติได้ด้วยต่อเมื่อพากันตั้งใจอยู่ในศีลธรรม ความปกติสุขย่อมเกิดขึ้นตลอดถึงธรรมชาติดินฟ้าอากาศ ย่อมเป็นไปโดยปกติทั้งคนอาจปรับปรุงธรรมชาติให้เกิดประโยชน์ขึ้นได้ด้วย
