คณะมนุษยศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์ ได้มีวิวัฒนาการจากหมวดการศึกษาของโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูยะลาจนมาเป็นวิทยาลัยครูยะลาตาม พ.ร.บ. วิทยาลัยครู พ.ศ. 2518 และมีผลให้การจัดสายงานการบริหารเป็นคณะวิชา คณะมนุษยศาสตร์และสังคศาสตร์เป็นคณะวิชาหนึ่งที่มีบทบาทหน้าที่ในการผลิตบัณฑิตสาขาวิชาการศึกษา
ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2535 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานนาม "สถาบันราชภัฏ" แทนวิทยาลัยครู วิทยาลัยครูยะลาจึงเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น "สถาบันราชภัฏยะลา" และในปี พ.ศ. 2538 ได้มีพระราชบัญญัติราชภัฏ พุทธศักราช 2538 มีผลให้การเรียกชื่อหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ในสถาบันมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากเดิม จากชื่อคณะวิชามนุษยศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์ ซึ่งมีหัวหน้าคณะวิชาเป็นผู้บริหารมาเป็น คณะมนุษยศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์ และเรียกผู้บริหารสูงสุดในคณะว่า "คณบดีคณะมนุษยศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์"
