ประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ


จากพงศาวดารเมืองยโสธรได้บันทึกไว้ว่า เมื่อราวๆ ปี พ.ศ. 2340 พระเจ้าวรวงศา (พระวอ) เสนาบดีเก่าเมืองเวียงจันทน์กับสมัครพรรคพวกเดินทางอพยพจะไปอาศัยอยู่กับเจ้านครจำปาศักดิ์ เมื่อเดินทางถึงดงผีสิงห์เห็นเป็นทำเลดี จึงได้ตั้งหลักฐานและสร้างเมืองที่นี่เรียกว่า “บ้านสิงห์ท่า” หรือ “เมืองสิงห์ท่า” ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2357 พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯให้ยกฐานะบ้านสิงห์ท่าแห่งนี้ขึ้นเป็น “เมืองยโสธร” ขึ้นตรงต่อกรุงเทพฯ มีเจ้าเมืองดำรงบรรดาศักดิ์เป็นพระสุนทรราชวงศา ในปี พ.ศ. 2515 ได้ยกฐานะขึ้นเป็นจังหวัดยโสธร โดยประกาศคณะปฏิวัติฉบับที่ 70 ลงวันที่ 6 กุมภาพันธ์ 2515 ได้แยกอำเภอยโสธร อำเภอคำเขื่อนแก้ว อำเภอมหาชนะชัย อำเภอป่าติ้ว อำเภอเลิงนกทา และอำเภอกุดชุม ออกจากจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี และรวมกันเป็นจังหวัดยโสธร ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 มีนาคม 2515

จังหวัดยโสธรมีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 4,161 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นจังหวัดที่มีขนาดเล็กที่สุดในเขตอีสานตอนล่าง จังหวัดยโสธรแบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 9 อำเภอ คือ อำเภอเมืองยโสธร คำเขื่อนแก้ว มหาชนะชัย ป่าติ้ว เลิงนกทา กุดชุม ค้อวัง ทรายมูล และไทยเจริญ
