สมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ทรงเป็นวีรกษัตริย์นักรบที่มีพระปรีชาสามารถยิ่ง ทรงเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์พระองค์แรกที่กอบกู้เอกราชให้ชาติไทย โดยเฉพาะวีรกรรมที่ทรงกระทำยุทธหัตถีกับพระมหาอุปราชาแห่งพม่านั้น . . . เป็นที่เลื่องลือมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยให้มีการจัดกิจกรรม การประกอบพิธีบวงสรวง การวางพานพุ่มสักการะที่บริเวณพระบรมราชานุสรณ์ดอนเจดีย์ และให้มีงานสมโภชอนุสรณ์ดอนเจดีย์ เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ในวันที่ ๑๘ มกราคม เป็นประจำทุกปี เพื่อเป็นการรำลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระองค์ท่าน



วันที่สมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ทรงกระทำยุทธหัตถีมีชัยชนะต่อพระมหาอุปราชา เรียกกันว่า “วันสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช” และทางกองทัพไทยได้กำหนดให้เป็น “วันกองทัพไทย” ด้วย ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ ๒๕ มกราคม ของทุกปี ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ ๒๙ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ.๒๕๔๘ คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติอนุมัติให้วันที่ ๒๕ เมษายนของทุกปี เป็น “วันคล้ายวันสวรรคตของสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช” และเป็นวันรัฐพิธี แทนวันจันทร์ขึ้น ๘ ค่ำ เดือน ๖ อันเป็นการนับทางจันทรคติ โดยให้มีการวางพวงมาลาและสักการะ แต่ไม่ถือเป็นวันหยุดราชการ และได้กำหนดใหม่ ให้วันที่ ๑๘ มกราคม ของทุกปีเป็น “วันยุทธหัตถี” และเป็นวันรัฐพิธีแทนวันที่ ๒๕ มกราคมของทุกปี โดยให้มีการวางพานพุ่มสักการะ แต่ไม่ถือเป็นวันหยุดราชการเช่นกัน การที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงวันทั้งสองดังกล่าว ก็ด้วยว่าเป็นการนับวันทางสุริยคติ ซึ่งคนปัจจุบันคุ้นชิน จำได้ง่าย และมีความเหมาะสมมากกว่า อีกทั้ง นายประเสริฐ ณ นคร ราชบัณฑิต ก็ได้คำนวณแล้วพบว่าการนับวันทางจันทรคติของวันกระทำยุทธหัตถีเดิมที่ตรงกับวันจันทร์ เดือน ๒ แรม ๒ ค่ำ จุลศักราช ๙๕๔ ที่กำหนดเป็นวันที่ ๒๕ มกราคมนั้น คลาดเคลื่อน จึงได้มีการเปลี่ยนใหม่ให้ตรงกับความเป็นจริง คือ เป็นวันที่ ๑๘ มกราคมดังกล่าว ดังนั้น ในปัจจุบัน วันที่ ๑๘ มกราคม จึงถือเป็น “วันยุทธหัตถี” หรือ “วันสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช”
