ประวัติความเป็นมา นายประเทือง เกตุอ่ำ นายอำเภอวังทรายพูน โดยเป็นผู้ริเริ่มจัดงานครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2533 ในการจัดงานได้รับการสนับสนุนงบประมาณจากองค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล และเทศบาล เป็นจำนวนเงิน 100,000 บาท การจัดงานประเพณีงานแตงโมโชว์กรงนก เพื่อบูรณาการกิจกรรมทางการเกษตรหลาย ๆ อย่างเข้าด้วยกัน เพื่อส่งเสริมและเผยแพร่กิจกรรมการเกษตรในฤดูแล้ง หัตถกรรมจักสานกรงนก ซึ่งเป็นเอกลักษณ์และสร้างรายได้ให้กับชุมชน เน้นการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมในอันที่จะส่งผลให้เกษตรกรมีรายได้เพียงพอ พัฒนาไปสู่การเกษตรที่ยั่งยืนให้กับประชาชนในอำเภอ ซึ่งในงานได้จัดกิจกรรมหลากหลายอย่างเข้าด้วยกัน มีการประกวดเต็นท์นิทรรศการเน้นแนวพระราชดำรัสพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ด้านเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงของแต่ละตำบล การจำหน่ายสินค้าการเกษตรแตงโมปลอดสารพิษ และหัตถกรรมจักสานกรงนก สินค้าหนึ่งตำบลหนึ่งผลิตภัณฑ์ การประกวดแข่งขันเต้นแอร์โรบิคเพื่อสุขภาพของประชาชน นักเรียน นักศึกษา และการแข่งขัน เปตอง การประกวดแตงโมปลอดสารพิษการแข่งขันกินแตงโม ประกวดส้มตำแตงโมประเภทลีลา การจำหน่ายหัตถกรรมพื้นบ้านกรงนกเขา กิจกรรมประกวดจินตลีลา และในกิจกรรมประกวดธิดาแตงโม ตัวแทนจากลูกหลานในหมู่บ้าน ซึ่งปัจจุบันทางอำเภอวังทรายพูน จัดงานประเพณีขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปีเพื่ออนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมประเพณีให้คงอยู่สืบไป
