นักวิชาการเรียกที่มาของกฎหมายอิสลามทั้ง 4 ประการนี้ว่า หลักฐานปฐมภูม และเรียกประเภทอื่น ๆ ที่ถูกจัดอยู่ในหมวดของหลักฐานที่ใช้การวิเคราะห์ทางสติปัญญาว่า หลักฐานสืบเนื่อง หรือ หลักฐานทุติยภูมินั่นเอง
