รายงานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านอาหารอีสานและร้านกาแฟในจังหวัดขอนแก่น เพื่อเปรียบเทียบวิธีการตั้งชื่อของร้านดังกล่าวว่ามีความเหมือนและความแตกต่างกันอย่างไร ร้านค้าที่ใช้เป็นข้อมูลในการศึกษามีที่ตั้งอยู่ภายในเขตอำเภอเมืองจังหวัดขอนแก่น จำนวน 120 ร้าน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ศึกษาได้แก่ คอมพิวเตอร์สำหรับสืบค้นข้อมูลจากอินเทอร์เน็ตและการบันทึกข้อความด้วยตนเอง
ผลการศึกษาพบว่า วิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านอาหารอีสานในจังหวัดขอนแก่นมีทั้งหมด 6 ประเภท ได้แก่ ชื่อที่มีคำว่าส้มตำเป็นคำประกอบ หรือ ชื่อคน + คำว่าส้มตำ ชื่อที่บอกรสชาติอาหาร ชื่อที่มีคำบอกสถานที่ ชื่อที่บอกรายการอาหารหรือวัตถุดิบ ชื่อที่มีคำเรียกสิ่งของ และ ชื่ออื่นๆ วิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านกาแฟในจังหวัดขอนแก่นมีทั้งหมด 6 ประเภทหลัก ได้แก่ ชื่อที่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษและมีคำว่า coffee หรือ café เป็นคำประกอบ ชื่อที่บอกประเภทหรือวัตถุดิบอาหาร ชื่อที่เป็นคำภาษาไทย ชื่อที่เป็นภาษาไทย+ภาษาอังกฤษ ชื่อที่มีคำภาษาอีสาน และ ชื่ออื่นๆ
ความเหมือนของวิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านอาหารอีสานและร้านกาแฟ ได้แก่ วิธีการตั้งชื่อของร้านดังกล่าวที่มีคำบอกประเภทของอาหาร คือคำว่า “ส้มตำ” และ คำว่า “coffee” หรือ “café” วิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านที่มีคำบอกวัตถุดิบหรือรายการอาหาร วิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านที่มีคำภาษาอีสาน และ วิธีการตั้งชื่อร้านที่มีคำบอกสถานที่
