ประชาคมอาเซียน คือ การรวมตัวกันในระดับที่เพิ่มพูนขึ้นของประเทศในอาเซียน (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) ซึ่งแต่เดิมนั้นใช้คำว่า “association” (สมาคม) เท่านั้น เพื่อให้มีความสัมพันธ์ที่แน่นแฟ้นยิ่งขึ้น ความสัมพันธ์ที่แน่นแฟ้นนี้หมายถึง การรวมตัวกันเป็นประชาคมบนรากฐานของกฎเกณฑ์ (rules-base community) มีประชาชนเป็นศูนย์กลาง (people-centred) มีการเชื่อมโยง (connectivity) ทั้งทางกายภาพ กฎระเบียบ และประชาชน และการมุ่งเน้นการปฏิบัติที่ดียิ่งขึ้น (community of action) ทั้งหมดนี้ ก็เพื่อนำไปสู่สันติภาพและความมั่นคง การเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจ และการพัฒนาทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรม









อาเซียนประกอบด้วย 3 เสาหลัก

1. ประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน (ASEAN Political-Security Community: APSC)

2. ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community: AEC)

3. ประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน (ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community: ASCC)
