ยืนยง โอภากุล เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 พฤศ

ยืนยง โอภากุล เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2497 ที่ ตำบลท่าพี่เลี้ยง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี เป็นบุตรชายฝาแฝดคนสุดท้องของ นายมนัส โอภากุล (แซ่โอ๊ว) และ นางจงจินต์ แซ่อึ๊ง (ปัจจุบันบิดาและมารดาเสียชีวิตแล้ว ไม่แนใจว่าตาย เพราะสาเหตุใด) มีจิตใจรักเสียงเพลงและดนตรีมาตั้งแต่เด็ก ๆ จากการที่เป็นชาวสุพรรณบุรีโดยกำเนิด จึงได้ซึมซ่าบการละเล่นพื้นบ้านของภาคกลาง เช่น ลำตัด, เพลงฉ่อย,เพลงอีแซว รวมถึงรำวง และเพลงลูกทุ่ง จากการที่พ่อ คือ นายมนัส เป็นหัวหน้าวงดนตรีประจำจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ชื่อวงดนตรี "ชสพ." ในยุค 2480 ต่อมาเมื่อเข้าสู่วัยรุ่นได้รับอิทธิพลจากดนตรีแนวตะวันตกจึงหันมาเล่นเครื่องดนตรีตะวันตกต่าง ๆ เช่น กีตาร์ ซึ่งเหล่านี้ได้เป็นอิทธิพลในการเป็นนักดนตรีในเวลาต่อมา[1]
ยืนยงเริ่มเข้ารับการศึกษาชั้นประถมที่โรงเรียนวัดสุวรรณภูมิ และสำเร็จการศึกษาชั้นมัธยมจากโรงเรียนกรรณสูตศึกษาลัย และเดินทางเข้าสู่กรุงเทพมหานครเพื่อศึกษาต่อเหมือนเด็กต่างจังหวัดทั่วไป โดยขอติดมากับรถขนส่งไปรษณีย์ เข้าเรียนต่อใน สถาบันเทคโนโลยีราชมงคล วิทยาเขตอุเทนถวาย (โรงเรียนช่างก่อสร้างอุเทนถวาย) และต่อในระดับปริญญาตรี สาขาสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ ที่สถาบันเทคโนโลยีมาปัว ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ เป็นเวลา 1 ปี (ในปี พ.ศ. 2556 ได้รับปริญญาดุษฎีบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์ สาขาดนตรีไทยสมัยนิยม จากมหาวิทยาลัยรามคำแหง[2])
ที่ฟิลิปปินส์ ยืนยง โอภากุลได้พบกับเพื่อนคนไทยที่ไปเรียนหนังสือที่นั้น คือ สานิตย์ ลิ่มศิลา หรือ ไข่ และ กีรติ พรหมสาขา ณ สกลนคร หรือ เขียว ซึ่งยืนยงได้มีโอกาสฟังเพลงของ เลด เซพเพลิน, จอห์น เดนเวอร์,ดิ อีเกิ้ลส์ และปีเตอร์ แฟลมตัน จากแผ่นเสียงที่ ไข่ สานิตย์ ลิ่มศิลา สะสมไว้เป็นจำนวนมาก ต่อมา ทั้ง 3 จึงร่วมกันตั้งวงดนตรีขึ้นมา โดยใช้ชื่อว่า "คาราบาว" เพื่อใช้ในการแสดงบนเวทีในงานของสถาบัน โดยเล่นดนตรีแนวโฟล์ค
เมื่อ ยืนยง โอภากุลสำเร็จการศึกษาและกลับมาเมืองไทย ได้ทำงานประจำเป็นสถาปนิกในสำนักงานเอกชนแห่งหนึ่ง และมีงานส่วนตัวคือรับออกแบบบ้านและโรงงาน ต่อมาเมื่อไข่และเขียวกลับมาจากฟิลิปปินส์ ทั้ง 3 ได้เล่นดนตรีร่วมกันอีกครั้งโดยเล่นในห้องอาหารที่โรงแรมวินเซอร์ ซอยสุขุมวิท 20 และต่อมาย้ายไปเล่นที่โรงแรมแมนดาลิน สามย่าน โดยขึ้นเล่นในวันศุกร์และเสาร์ แต่ทางวงถูกไล่ออกเพราะขาดงานหลายวันโดยไม่บอกกล่าว
เมื่อวงถูกไล่ออก ไข่ จึงได้แยกตัวออกไปทำงานรับเหมาก่อสร้างอยู่ทางภาคใต้ แอ๊ดและเขียวยังคงเล่นดนตรีต่อไป โดยเล่นร่วมกับวง โฮป ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2523 ยืนยง โอภากุล ได้ทำงานเป็นสถาปนิก ประจำสำนักงานบริหารโครงการ ของการเคหะแห่งชาติ ส่วนเขียวทำงานเป็นวิศวกร ประเมินราคาเครื่องจักรโรงงานอยู่กับบริษัทของฟิลิปปินส์ที่มาเปิดสาขาในประเทศไทย และทั้งคู่จะเล่นดนตรีในตอนกลางคืน โดยเล่นประจำที่ดิกเก็นผับ ในโรงแรมแอมบาสเดอร์ สุขุมวิท

จุดเปลี่ยนของชีวิต ยืนยง โอภากุล อยู่ที่การรับหน้าที่เป็นโปรดิวเซอร์อัลบั้มชุดแรกให้กับวงแฮมเมอร์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2522 ในชุด "บินหลา" โดย ยืนยง โอภากุล ยังเป็นผู้ออกแบบปกอัลบั้มด้วย ซึ่งอัลบั้มชุดนี้ทำให้แฮมเมอร์เป็นที่รู้จักในวงการเพลง และปี พ.ศ. 2523 แอ๊ดยังได้แต่งเพลง ถึกควายทุย ให้แฮมเมอร์บันทึกเสียงในอัลบั้ม "ปักษ์ใต้บ้านเรา" อัลบั้มชุดดังกล่าวทำให้แฮมเมอร์โด่งดังอย่างมาก และได้ร่วมแต่งเพลงประกอบภาพยนตร์ของพนม นพพรเรื่องหมามุ่ย ในปี พ.ศ. 2524
หลังจากนั้นตัวของ ยืนยง โอภากุล ก็มีความคิดที่ว่าหากจะออกอัลบั้มเป็นของตัวเอง คงจะประสบความสำเร็จเช่นเดียวกัน จึงร่วมกับเขียว ออกอัลบั้มชุดแรกของวง คาราบาว ในชื่อชุด "ขี้เมา" ในปี พ.ศ. 2524 สังกัดพีค๊อก สเตอริโอ ซึ่งไม่ประสบความสำเร็จมากนัก ปีถัดมา คาราบาว ได้สมาชิกใหม่เพิ่มอีก 1 คนคือ เล็ก ( ปรีชา ชนะภัย ) มือกีตาร์จากวง "เพรสซิเดนท์" มาร่วมงานในชุดที่ 2 คือชุด "แป๊ะขายขวด" ชุดที่ 3 ชุด "วณิพก" เล็กเป็นเพื่อนเก่าของแอ๊ดตั้งแต่สมัยเรียนอยู่ช่างก่อสร้างอุเทนถวายด้วยกัน ในระหว่างนั้นวงคาราบาวในยุคแรกก็ได้ออกทัวร์เล่นคอนเสิร์ตตามโรงภาพยนตร์ต่าง ๆ ทั่วประเทศ แต่ไม่ได้รับความสนใจเท่าไร บางครั้งมีคนดูไม่ถึง 10 คนก็มี
คาราบาว มาประสบความสำเร็จในอัลบั้มชุดที่ 5 ของวง คือ ชุด "เมด อิน ไทยแลนด์" ที่ออกในปลายปี พ.ศ. 2527 ซึ่งมียอดจำหน่ายสูงถึง 5 ล้านตลับ และนับตั้งแต่นั้น ชื่อของ ยืนยง โอภากุล ก็เป็นที่รู้จักกันดีของคนไทย และออกผลงานเพลงร่วมกับวงคาราบาวมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง รวมถึงได้แสดงคอนเสิร์ตที่สหรัฐอเมริกาอีกด้วย
