1.ประวัติความเป็นมา
เดิมเป็นกิ่งอำเภอ ขึ้นกับอำเภอสูงเม่น ต่อมาได้ยกฐานะเป็นอำเภอในปีพ.ศ.2506 เคยมีประวัติว่าเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ.2445 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี มีชาวเงี้ยวเข้ามาขุดพลอยที่ดอยปกกะโล้ง
(ปัจจุบันคือที่ตั้งบ้านบ่อแก้ว ม.4 ต.ไทรย้อย) และต่อมาสมัครพรรคพวกเข้าปล้นเมืองแพร่ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงโปรดให้พระยาสุรศักดิ์มนตรียกทัพปราบพวกเงี้ยวโดยได้ตั้งค่ายทัพที่บ้านเด่นทัพชัย และทำการปราบปรามพวกเงี้ยวได้เป็นผลสำเร็จ จึงให้ชื่อค่ายว่า "ค่ายเด่นทัพชัย" ต่อมาได้ยกฐานะเป็นตำบลเด่นชัย ในสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 อ.เด่นชัย เป็นที่ตั้งของกองทัพทหารพรานก่อนที่จะถอยกำลังไปรวมกับจังหวัดทหารบกลำปาง เมื่อ พ.ศ.2476 ปัจจุบันเป็นที่ตั้งของกองทัพทหารม้าที่ 12
